Hi - I'm planning on hiking the Auger Point traverse through Strathcona Park on the August long weekend... Does anyone have any recent info on trail conditions past Albert Edward? I'm expecting to run into some snow but not sure how much.
Thanks

I'd expect almost the entire route to be covered in snow.

From Strathcona's Current Trail Conditions:

"Beyond Helen MacKenzie; still has substantial depths of snow to Circlet Lake. A couple of tent pads are open at Kwai but access still is under snow." - July 18/12

The Buttle Lake side is not a problem. I just came back from hiking to the overlook of Ruth Masters Lake. The lake is still 95% frozen over as the sun doesn't hit the area for long.

Expect a lot of snow. I did that route last summer about this time and the snow levels this year are about the same.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Osbos, did you use snowshoes on your hike?

You won't need snowshoes at this time of year. The snow is quite consolidated. Gaiters will be useful as will an ice axe if you have one.

Not to derail the original question, but I am also heading up to Strathcona on August 8th-10th. My plan is to start from Paradise Meadows and head to Circlet Lake for the first night, then spend the second day hiking to Kwai Lake, and exploring the area. Day three is back out from Kwai Lake.

The last trail update was from July 18th, and as someone said, Circlet Lake area is still under snow. Is it likely to be gone by August 8th? If not, would it still be a reasonable hike for my fiancee's first overnight trip?

Also, what kind of temperature range are we looking at?

Thanks for the info!

I was up that way on a day hike last weekend, on the Kwai Lk loop and didn't go all the way to Circlet Lk. There were a few patches of snow on the trail, but all the tent pads were melted out at Kwai and I'd bet the same for Circlet. The ridges above still have lots of snow.

Thanks...did the summit on saturday. Snow clear till the first ridge and the snow that was there made the way up more easy!
