Huh after reading this thread, I now feel like I'm largely the odd man out as I always wear my hiking shoes when I go snowshoeing :p
I wear goretex shoes, and also goretex socks that go over my regular socks. With a double layer of goretex, my feet stay warm and dry even when snowshoeing for 11+ hours straight. The shoes do eventually get soaking wet, but the socks work well.
Having said all that, I'm somewhat queasy about recommending this to someone with hardware embedded in the ankle, so YMMV...

I snowshoe in my leather hiking boots, with gaitors. My boots are goretex lined. I double up my socks, and only wear my Sorel-type winter boots if it's quite cold out and I will be out more than a couple of hours.
My husband runs on showshoes, wearing his running shoes & oversize neoprene cycling booties (from MEC). These keep his feet dry and give a bit of extra insulation. |

You don't find those straps really uncomfortable? Most people I know find them unpleasant even just on soft winter boots.
