Hey all,

my aunt recently gave birth to a second baby, and I'm going up to her home at Hastings Lake, near Tofield Alberta, to take care of her seven year old for a week to handle some of the load of parenting two kids. I'm interested in bringing him swimming outdoors while we're there, but Google really doesn't show anything when it comes to freshwater swimming in the area. Most of the small lakes are still and would give swimmers itch, so the nearest good swimming hole I could find was Pigeon Lake, south of Edmonton Intl Airport. Any tips?

Also, any ghost towns to explore in that area? And what about any outdoorsy things within a forty five-ish minute drive of Hastings Lake?

Thanks a lot!

Try Wizard Lake south of Calmar. There is both a day use area as well as a campground at the lake. Our family spent many summers there when I was a growing up and my brother still goes there with his family.

You may also want to explore Elk Island National Park

Also Fort Edmonton can be a lot of fun

Try Miquelon Lake. It's not far from you and it's very popular with families with small children. The main beach is very shallow for quite a distance from shore which is great for toddlers.

Last year, Pigeon Lake was closed because of blue-green algae as were many others. Miquelon is close to Tofield (relatively) and the beach is shallow. However the bottom is mucky and the alkalinity is high. Expect to get swimmers' itch and use the fresh water showers by the washrooms.

There is also the Blackfoot regional rec area, great place for wildlife viewing and miles of trails. The lakes around Edmonton suck, shallow and small, good if your a duck I guess. Miquelon is one of the better ones, Alberta beach a bit to the north and west is not too bad, its on Lac St. Anne. Just to the west by Stony Plain is Allen beach resort. Small but good, no motors allowed, pretty developed. Only lake of any size close by would be Wabamun about 40mins west of Edmonton. East of the city is very flat and dry.

No beaches there, though.
