I went for a quick trip up Mount Strachan via Christmas Gully this evening to catch the sunset. I came down the ski hill.

There were two bears and lots of scat on and around the ski hill at the start of the hike.

With the exception of a few patches and the two avalanche chutes, the Howe Sound Crest Trail was basically snow free to the St Marks - Mount Strachan col. They are doing some serious upgrades on that trail. It should be possible to get strollers up there by the time they are done. I don't know how far they are planning on going.

From the col, the snow was continuous up the gulley. Falling through to the running water underneath could be a risk soon. The snow is well consolidated and I used an ice axe but no crampons. I turned left at the top to go to the true peak. After snapping some pictures I headed down to the top of the gulley, up to the peak of the ski hill and then down the ski runs to the car. I was singing whatever words I could remember from "No Woman No Cry" to let the bears know where I was. I made it to the car a bit after 10 without needing to use a headlamp.

A few pictures were touched up.

Beautiful Sunset Shots, a sweet outing late in the day. Thanks for the conditions report, as I am interested in ST. Mark's trail.

Thanks for the comments all.

Darren: Sounds good. I'd be up for doing it this coming week if anyone is interested. Maybe Wednesday?
