Hi Fellow Hikers
Just wanting to let you all know that the suspension bridge on the way to Radium Lake is missing an 8' section close to midspan. This section fell down on Saturday July 7. I went down with it into Radium Creek, close to a 14' drop. It is a miracle I survived this with only scrapes and bruises. After being swept downstream for about 10', I was able to regain my footing and resurfaced. I told my four friends, who watched in horror, that I was okay. I was then able to climb onto a stump, and from there onto a log back to shore. This section of bridge did not look rotten at all, and dropped without warning. Please be very careful when you get to this bridge!
PS this happened on the way back from the lake (Beautiful!)......

That would be terrifying! I am glad you were only minimally injured.

Deep breath, it is wonderful that you escaped unharmed! I'm sure you are counting your lucky stars and I'm really glad it wasn't me...I don't have near as good luck.

At least the outcome is ideal. Without a doubt we know the bridge is unsafe, and you are OK (save for shock and trauma!) Your fall may have saved somebody else.

PS. I'd be willing to give you a waiver if you didn't save the boards from being washed away as was mentioned in the other thread ;-)

Shiit, man, thats brutal, I thought stuff like that only happens to me, glad you are OK, and welcome to CT eh.
EDIT
Just looked on the other link, wow, that is Fkd, a potentially serious plunge for sure.

Wow, just headed up there today, not knowing it was out - had planned to stay the night at Radium Lake tonight, and head up Webb and/or MacDonald in the morning. Wondered whether I could have made it across, based only on the "suspension bridge is broken" sign posted on the trail. Decided against it - and glad I did.

Glad you are OK - I was pretty scared thinking about how nasty a fall could be, there!

Here is crossing the bridge a couple of weeks ago, on YouTube:

But no matter what, that same support area failed just the other year.

That comment is absolutely not true. I had my dog with me, who was really scared trying to cross the bridge. I walked really lightfooted across the bridge, constantly looking back at her.....Fortunately she was on the birdge section behind me which remained intact.

Crossbeam again? Poor design?

You probably wouldn't have been able to see the impending breakage.

The "media' CTV or? should get on this . Parks falling apart form lack of funding. If this had been in Capilano, we would never hear the end of it. You could have been killed!

Horrors, just looked at this thread. You were fortunate not to get injured, knocked out or drowned.

Ya, that's for sure. I've been hiking for over 20 years, member of SAR for 7, and worked in the woods for 6 years. I've learned to tread lightly and with care. I've seen what happens to inexperienced or unprepared hikers too many times...It could have been so much worse....

Crossed that bridge many times, it could have been me, bet there's lots of people out there thinking the same thing. At least you weren't injured badly enough to ruin the summer hiking season.

JTH, how did your doggie find it's way past the 8' gap? I think you should contact the Progress or The Times and tell them your story. Maybe we'll get some action on the trails out here.

Happy trails,
Lynn

After my four friends crossed the bridge walking on the lower support wires, one of them emptied his backpack, crossed the bridge again, and put her in his backpack. He strapped her to his chest and carried her across. I watched her....she knew he was trying to help her and never even struggled....

Damn, that would of ruined my day. Good thing it was on the way back. I can see people wanting to bounce and jump on it, just like any other suspension bridge. Not saying you were . I do it.

What does that mean an "aggressive crossing" foot stomping and such?
