Greetings,

I am planning on trekking through Garibaldi Park next weekend and am exploring the idea of parking at Rubble Creek, spending the night at Garibali Lake, hiking the Black Tusk and then trekking to the Helm Creek campground. This plan depends on the ability to call for a cab at Cheakamus Lake parking lot to get a ride back to Rubble Creek. Has anyone else done this or can confirm that htere is cell coverage at Cheakamus Lake?

Thanks.

I had a very poor signal on Telus but I have a friend who got a good signal on Bell.

Cheakamus Lake is pretty busy, so it's entirely possible you may be able to hitchhike back to Rubble Cr and save yourself cab fare.

Easy hitch hiking around there too, or stashing a bike is another good option.

Thanks for the input.

There will be 3 of us(3 stinky guys with packs), so hitchhiking may be difficult, but not out of the question.

Realistically only one person needs to hitch back to get the other car, as long as they remember to bring the car key.

The other two can sit and guard the packs.

Years ago I laminated a sign;
"HIKER
RETURNING
TO CAR
" as big and bold as would fit a page.
Has served me well, especially on the highway where it is not obvious why you're hitchhiking, as it is at trailhead parking.

I've camped at Cheakamus lake and had cell serivce at the middle campsite. There was also service during part of the hike as well. It comes and goes but when you have it the signal is decent. With Fido/Rogers.

That's strange because Telus and Bell share the same cell sites. For that matter, I think Rogers, Telus, and Bell have all shared the same tower sites for some years now.

For sure you can get cell reception from the Helm Creek trail; except maybe for pockets down in the bottom of the valley.

But a cab might not be willing to go up to the Cheakamus Lake trail parking lot because of the gravel road.

I would walk down the Cheakamus Lake road and try hitch hiking first (that's what I've done in the past). If you get all the way down to Highway 99, you can always catch a bus down to Garibaldi if you don't want to hitch hike. Of course, then you still need to hike back up from Highway 99 to the Black Tusk parking lot.

Cabs go to Whistler bungee so I doubt they'll have a problem with Cheakamus lake.
There will be lots of traffic as already mentioned so you should be able to grab a lift.

If, as you say, you're going at the weekend, then hitching will be really easy. I've done the hitch in and out of Cheakamus a few times doing the 'traverse' in either direction. The Whistler area is very hitcher friendly.
