I recently hiked the Nootka Trail. I have read all the guide books. But I am curious as to the history of the trail. Its weird, because its an amazing trail and it is not maintained or protected,,,, its bizarre.

when did people start doing the usual route,, flying in and boating out?

who flagged and cut the headland by pass trails?

also,, does any one know who and how, the out house at Calvin Falls got there? the surfer shack history?

I have heard the surfer shack was originally put up by squatters. I have also heard surfer built it. so any history on the trail or back ground would be greatly appreciated.

this trail is a beauty.

Pal Horvath originally brought this trail to the public's attention and published a booklet guide in 2001. He was also supported by the Federation of Mountain Clubs with their funding and distribution of thousands of pamphlets about the Nootka Island route.

The route was publicly known from at least the early 1970's, but it took people like Pal and groups like the FMCBC to bring it to the public's attention.

Early hikers either went in by canoe or kayak and reported much logging, right down to the beach. Pal wanted to see this area preserved and produced his publications, to garner public support.

It is considered one of the best beach hikes on Vancouver Island and deserves Provincial Park status.

There are places on route, where the lands are privately owned and cabins have been built, so this is not the West Coast Trail, but something a bit more in transition, yet still a bit more wild than the WCT.

For more info on West Coast beach hikes, see Philip Stone's book, Coastal Hikes, www.wildisle.ca

When i was a kid we used to fly in and land on the beach at Calvin falls and the surfer shack was there, but a bit more of a shelter. this was around 1986-1988. it was an awesome place to go and camp. My stepdad had a little piper clipper, and we'd routinely camp on the west coast beaches. I'd love to hike the trail one day, to see how much it's changed up there. Plus playing in the falls was pretty awesome as a kid.

Last summer we had two fly-ins to Calvin Falls in one day. One plane spent the night. Something you get used to not seeing when you hike in parks.
