The July 2/2012 Parks Canada Trail Conditions report for the Chilkoot is currently recommending snowshoes for the section from the summit to Happy Camp. I'm just wondering if anyone has been over the trail recently and can provide an update on snow conditions, or if snowshoes are really required? I've hiked this trail several times on snow in June and early July, and I don't think I've ever seen a pair of snowshoes being used. I plan to hike the trail soon (awaiting a favourable three-day weather forecast).

Thanks

I answered my own question by hiking the Chilkoot Trail this past Sunday - Tuesday. There is a lot of snow on the Canadian side of the trail. More than I have ever seen on the past dozen trips over this trail. From the Chilkoot Pass to Happy Camp is about 90% snow-covered. Snow depth at the summit is about 10m deeper than normal for this time of year. The snow was firm in the early morning & all the creek crossings are totally covered, no post-holing, no snowshoes needed, no problem.
