Planning on doing Coliseum Mtn from Lynn Valley, although the information on the Lynn Valley website says the trail is still closed wondering if anyone has done it recently. What are the snow conditions like (if any).
Thanks in advance
First time going up there.
Cheers. |

I'd imagine lots of snow from around 1000 meters. There is some flagging tape you could follow to the ridge (unless some people from http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=50820 removed it when the trail was obvious last August ) There are a couple of steep sections where I was glad I had an ice axe, but you could probably do it with poles too.

Well will give a TR if I do go up. Unfortunately, wife and I don't have a mtn bike so the extra from the east might not be something we'll do. But might try from Lynn Valley and see where we can go. Going to bring the dog too and see how he does.
Any other info I will take :) |

| You don't need a mountain bike as the road is paved pretty much the whole way. |

But up there at least once, and is due for a re-visit, and also like to do Burwell this summer. The walk along the lower trail is pleasant and quick.

I headed up Coliseum mountain last weekend (21st) with some friends. Unfortunately it rained most of the way, and we were in cloud for most of it. Lots of mud and slippy roots on the trail.
About an hour from where we turned around we passed a trail runner on his way down and he said it was a complete whiteout up top and snow everywhere.
We hadn't been up there before so didn't know for sure how much more we had to go after we stopped for lunch. So we decided to turn around at that point. It had rained most of the way there and we knew it was going to be a long trip back down.
Looking at the map afterwards I think we actually got quite close to the top. I've marked the point on the map here where I think we got to. No way to confirm for sure though.

There was no snow on the actual trail up to that point at least.
Some more pics here if you are interested. Not much of a view from the top though!! - https://plus.google.com/photos/107750505819173862357/albums/5768119187513794385?authkey=CIvzz8b4-qe4Mw
Took about 9 hours in total from car to car. Up and down was slow in parts due to the rain.
Have to go back and do the rest of it on a sunny day. |

How did it go?
Did you make it up to the top? I'd be interested to see any pictures you have from the top. Want to do it again at some stage and would like to make it the whole way up. |

Well we went. Unfortunately no TR as we didn't do the summit. So I don't want my first TR to just be a let down, mostly for myself.. ha ha.
We made it to where you made it too, had lunch and it was so overcast and foggy at any of the 'viewpoints' we could see nothing (literally 10-15 feet in front of us).
We stopped and had lunch and the wife and I were getting getting bugged by the bugs(pun intended). Based on the weather and the bugs the wife wanted to go back, so we did..... And of course as we start to descend the weather gets better, the sun burnt off lots of clouds and my wife constantly reassures me there wouldn't have been a view point up there anyways. lol.... So all in all, will need to do it again.
For the trail condition at 3700 feet there was little to no snow anywhere near the trail (although there was snow around).
Sorry for the let down as I've been pestering people on the site in relation to the conditions for a while.
Will try to post something eventful next time. |

Went up there today. Probably wasn't the best idea on a hot day like this :p.
It's pretty much snow free all the way to the summit. There are snow patches but they are easily avoided, and they sure came in handy when I needed to cool myself off in a hurry!
Burwell has more snow patches but they look easily avoidable as well. Didn't have the energy to tackle it today as the Norvan slog sapped too much of my energy, though. |

| Did you see any lightning up there today? I can see Burwell from my living room window and it looked pretty dark up there this afternoon. Also heard some thunder coming down the valley from there. |

Nah it was only starting to cloud over just as I was leaving the summit. Didn't see any lightning and only had a slight rain on the way down.
There sure are a lot of lightning here in Maple Ridge right now though! |

Anyone reached the summit lately? Any bears around? I've been thinking of heading up there solo for a while now. Even though I know that the chances of running into a bear are slim, I just want to be prepared.

No bears when I went. There were quite a few people up there at the time I went, so I suspect that'll help keep the bears shy.
Of course, what didn't happen one day may happen another day, so it's good to take basic precautions regardless.

Tnx Pete,
as for the precautions, I presume a bear spray along with a decent walking stick would be enough to keep any unruly bears away from me. Any other tips?
cheers |

| Bear spray and a walking stick are last resorts. Ideally you want to get the bear to move away before you have to deploy either one. This is where being in a large group, and carrying a noise making device like an air horn and/or bear bangers, is helpful as these devices can get bears to move away from you long before you need to spray pepper on them or try to poke them with a stick. |
