Has anyone had the chance to check these out? I saw a talk on ted.com about them and they seem pretty great. I looked as best could and could not find anyone on here mention them. They seem like a bit of an investment but worth it as far as i know. But i may be a noob. Any thoughts? I wonder what other people are using for water treatment on the trail. As an added bonus the ceo is a credit to the human race. (I know this counts) http://www.lifesaversystems.com/

Haven't watched the presentation, but isn't this just a carbon filter water bottle? Lots of those about...even in BC a company has been producing one.
On a side note: beware TED talks! Some seem good, others have misinformation. I noticed some, and in the last couple months I've talked to two PHD's....a chemist, and a psychologist, both of whom had gripes about TED talks presentations. |

The trouble is that ted talks are supposed to be inspiring, which means new ideas, which means no real research. This is fine for those already in the intellectual community looking for research paths, but when the videos are released to the general public, they don't always realize the idea being presented is currently unsupported and likely solely a theory of the presenter. |

Really? Wow, i've been drinking from mountain streams all of my life and my issues to date have been 0. I have been sick once from food and that was from a catering company with food safe certification. |

| I am aware we have some of the best water in the world but I generally hike with my son and I am not letting him drink from a stream with out some kind of assurance that he wont get sick, Winging it seems irresponsible to me. I am not an extremely experienced back country traveler so I would like to err on the side of caution. |

I just drink from the streams as well in the alpine, and sometimes in the woods. I do carry water purification tablets with me, but I don't think I've ever used one except in my kitchen, as a trial.
I can understand you wanting to be cautious though! I think the vast majority of the time if you and your son are healthy, you'll be fine, but then again, nobody wants to be sick out there, even if the odds are against it!
Had the time to actually look at the filter, and see it's a bit more than just a carbon filter! Sounds pretty good, but expensive. I suppose if it does 4000/6000 L though, in the long run it would easily beat out say..the Katadyn bottle in value.
PS. Yeah, the problem with the TED talks is that they are presenting unpublished material, then no other experts have checked it, and even when it is legit work, some of the presenters embellish their story with misleading, or even blatantly incorrect info....maybe in particular the types of people who find an appeal in being a presenter are particularly prone to the loose showmanship...or at least are the ones who tend to be successful! Unfortunately, academics these days...well there's a lot of ugliness, pettiness, self-serving, commercial, motivations going around. (note: found out this morning that a close friend was screwed over by one of the biggest names in academia) Sad...once you can't trust academia...then there not much left to resort to. Anyways, bottom line: don't assume the info from a TED talk is always sound..... |
