Was up at Cape Scott last weekend for 3 days. It was spectacular. Stayed at Nels for 2 nights and spent the last day at San Josef in the sun! The first day we met up with a couple people just finishing up the NCT and said they had a great time. The rest of the weekend we had the entire park to ourselves, never saw anyone else on the beach or on the trail, with the exception of a couple park rangers.
There was a few items clearly from Japan scattered around on the beaches, and lots of floats. We actually played bocce with a bunch of round plastic we found on the beach. Never saw any wolves, but apparently there have been some sightings recently.
Here are a couple photos from the weekend:

Nice! San Josef Bay is a great place. I still have a gear cache in there from my North Island days. Cool that you were able to get some of that rare NI sunshine.
I heard Ronnings Garden was sold and that one of the giant Puzzle trees fell over in a storm? Been a few years since I have been there.

| Looks like you had fun. The weather looks pretty decent. I haven't been there in years. I remember the road being a bit rough. |

| Glad to hear it was a great trip. And lots or privacy as well. The last time I was at Nels, it was standing room only. |

Excellent! I'm looking forward to a trip at the end of the month. I've read the maps, but is the trail a there-and-back or a loop trail? For some reason I thought people hiked counter clockwise following the shore from Nels Bight to San Josef Bay. |

I was there 25 years ago.....looks just the same and just as deserted. I had 3 days absolutely to myself. Time stood still. |

It's not a loop. It's basically one trail from the Parking Lot to the Lighthouse that you hike there and back. If you want to do a longer, more difficult route you can do the North Coast Trail, which is a one way trail (you need to boat in to one end and the parking lot is the other end).
I did a trail guide that you might find helpful here:
