check out the topo map I made for a trip from princess louisa inlet to Simms creek
purple numbers are degrees, red the minutes

this image prints to the map that fit nicely in a waterproof folded map carrier

I wanted to explain here how I did this, but IM having a tough time finding where I got the images

ok here is how you make a map like the one above

http://www.canmaps.com/topomaps/nts50/toporama/images/092j05.gif
change the image name to the maps that you want to make a submap out of, yes you will have to stitch them together but first download all maps you will be using

now you have to add lines to each maps. The hard part is that we cant put a line in like every 0.2 pixels, but if we dont do every 0.2 pixels the lines wont line up, after going acroos hte map the line will be of by 15 pixels or whatever.

So the map has to be resized, so horizontally the map cover 0.5 degrees (30 minutes) so we need a line every minute. The unchaged size of the map is 3200x1600 pixel. take 3200/30 = 106.6666
so we resize the map so that there is a line every 106 pixels, so 106X30=3180

download free program called Artweaver free

open up the map gif in artweaver, got to image-> image size enter 3180 for width, height will be auto popullated, 1600 will be reduced by 10 (the grids are the same size vert x horiz)

now add the grid, go to filter -> texture -> Lined Paper. Change horizontal spacing to 106. Change vertical spacing to 106
click the transparency checkbox, change grid color to black click OK

now cut and past parts of one or multiple maps of where you will be hiking, each line is right on a "minute" so label them so you have to look at map extremeties when you are hiking

verify your minute values by going here:
http://www.canmaps.com/topo/buy-topo-maps/waterproof-paper/50k/092j04.htm

look at hte map at top middle of that website, place your mouse over the map and you can see zoomed in map, where the minute lines are and their values
