Where does the energy for the Tesla come from?
What fuels the heavy equipment in the mines for the materials required to manufacture the batteries?
What fuels the ships that transport everything across the sea? |

It's not even about the use of gas or the production of energy.
Even if 100% of the worlds energy needs was through renewable means the demand for oil would still be huge.
About half the oil produced goes into the products we use (I don't mean energy from oil makes these products, I mean the products are made of oil)
Here's a partial list of items we'd need to stop using so that the world could no longer need oil.

My issue with the pipeline is that Enbridge's safety standards just aren't good enough. The company has repeatedly shown it can't be trusted with upholding world class standards for pipeline safety.

Oh, I hear ya. I was kinda joking about the whole car anyways, as they are pricey bastards, to say the least. That said, I think electric vehicles are pretty cool.
HAHA, well I assume Darren was being facetious! You definitely would not want to buy a Tesla' motor's car, unless your very rich, and want a little play toy....in which case, you aren't exactly Mr. Environment! Otherwise, it would be absurd. |

In general a dual approach of objecting to it and reducing your use of energy is what's best. If you're looking for specifics, there are many ways to object to it and innumerable ways to use less energy. Having a better picture of the thoughts behind the question would help in offering answers. |

I certainly work to reduce my energy use, however there's no denying I'm one of the worst energy users I know. My job requires constant car use and my car (a volvo wagon) isn't so efficient. I try to bike and transit when I'm not working, but that only saves so much.
On the other hand, I was thinking there might be political pressure points I could assist in pushing. My days of protesting are behind me because it has clearly lost all effect on political process. I remember marching in a rally against the war in high school and realizing most people there were just ineffectual hippies that used rallies as a expo for their own pet causes, sometimes very very tentatively linked to the actual cause. |

VOTE!
And make it an informed vote. You may need to join a political party to select a decent leader. It's clear that Nathan Cullen is against northern gateway just as it is clear as a bell that both the current governments of BC and Canada will sell our futures for Enbridge's gain.

Well Dru, I've been getting up every morning at dawn, and standing in my street squeaking like damn mouse and so far nothing. I hope you're right about this plan because the neighbours won't make eye contact anymore.

That was an abnormally good documentary. Beautifully shot, nicely woven together narrative and it didn't get too sanctimonious about its message (after all, topical films are supposed to be about convincing the people not yet convinced). Clearly not the point of you suggesting it, but I thought I would give my ringing endorsement as a film buff and maker.
I'm following up on that link. I encourage others to do so as their sensibilities dictate. |

Stop electing Conservatives!
Oh, wait! The thread title is 'Enbridge Pipeline' and I just implied that the government's policies in regard to the environment were wrong. So now I guess I'm an environmental terrorist as well as anti-Canadian!
Darn. It's going to suck being locked away in a concentration camp. |

If Enbridge is built, BC will mean "Billowing Crude"
Or, as a twist on this recently-discarded slogan: "British Columbia - It's the Oiliest Place on Earth!" |

How about Ms. Clark's recent proposal? Hey Alberta, if you meet our conditions (send us money, listen to our FN people, get the world's best spill team ready to clean your mess, and pass environmental review...) and you can have your pipeline.
'No' would have been a better proposal.

| The pipeline should be headed east from Alberta-based upgraders to refineries in (and serving) Eastern Canada, but why would we want to do something in our own country's interest when we can serve China's? |
