I went for a quick hike Monday morning to Beauty Peak. On my way down to Goat from Dam, there was a big sign indicating that the area is closed. I was wondering whether that sign was posted as a result of the recent Crown accident and who put it, Grouse? By the way, quite some elevation this Beauty!

It it's the one I'm thinking about, it was up there at the time of the Crown incident. It's one of those signs that if it's hinged closed it shows 'open', if it's hinged open, it shows 'closed'... and it was broken when we went by.

Beauty Peak? Do you mean the western subsummit of Crown? How were the snow conditions up there?

Yes, that is what I meant.
I was there late morning and the snow was quite firm. It made for an easy and fast travel. I have never been there and it took me a bit of routefinding dropping to the base of the final climb to the peak. Only the slab on top of Beauty was free of snow. Moats are impressive below Crown. Ouch!

There is probably an area closed sign 'cause the area is closed. The back country area behind Grouse is Metro Vancouver land that is closed in winter conditions.

I think they close that area every winter to prevent people without proper experience/gear go to Goat and beyond. Maybe that started only after a man died there in 2009.
