Grouse is kind of a special case. Unless you've seen it, it is hard to believe the number of woefully unprepared, inexperienced and just plain that-word-I-have-been-told-not-to-use people heading out 1/2 hour before dark in flip-flops and t-shirts, not knowing where they are, where they're going, how long it takes them to climb 800+ meters or how to take a pee without a toilet handy.
Grouse is not all that scary, trails all over the place, 800-900 meters up or down to either a road or the unmistakable ski runs. A couple of gullies to stay out of, a traverse across mid-elevation would be tough. You might have to go up or down as much as 100 meters to find a safe gully crossing! Tougher in flip-flops.
NSR is called out dozens of times a year, and does far more non-official rescues. Saves on paperwork, you know.
I recall two incidents in the past five years or so that were a legitimate injury of an otherwise capable person, the rest were not a single mistake made, but multiple overlapping dumb rookie mistakes.
And back to the original theme... Trail markers on Grouse may seem redundant, but are vital to allow the SARtechs to sleep at night, at least a few extra times.

I think some people kind of go uphill 1/2 way, figure they have climbed way too much and are are now too far above the top of the mountain (the extreme elevation interferes with logical thought), then go 1/2 way down, think they are now somewhere below Stanley Park and start up again. I don't understand how you can get lost on Grouse, but people do.

So now my kid orders a Happy Meal with healthy grilled chicken wrap, healthy apple slices, healthy yoghurt and 1% milk. They teach this stuff in school. WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO?

In all likelihood, its a black tar paint meant to protect the trees from infiltration by insects into the vulnerable core exposed by the guy with the hatchet. Hardly cosmetic, just meant to prevent further damage.

Looks like that wasn't a troll after all. You guys really don't like trees or know very much about them.

Nah, it's just black paint. I've seen it.

Not wanting to stir the pot (there are already 5 pages of that), but in the same general area of the lower slopes of Grouse...

LOL! Um....yeah....this thread is labeled "jerk"...and it's sole purpose was not to discuss solutions, or understand what might be going on, which was heavily resisted by many, but to call somebody a "jerk". I don't think you have to worry much about the integrity of the thread!

Interesting that the private property theory was mentioned in the article...though they don't specifically label the area, as Shadowchaser mentioned.

In any case, the marker removal has been going on for years now, in more than one place in that area, and the possible motives are varied....various theories from the forum members alone. Perhaps unfortunate, but will probably go on until more understanding is reached.
