The man in the office at the Fish Hatchery at Seymour Dam told me that the Bear Island Footbridge across the Seymour River will open Friday.

This will enable bikers and hikers to loop around the roads on the West and East sides of Seymour valley.

This will make a nicer bike approach to the Vicar Lakes trailhead IMO since the paved trail is easier to ride on than the somewhat rough gravel east side road.

It makes it somewhat easier to visit the General and his Wife, the supersized trees just 10 minutes from Vicar Lake trailhead.

BTW there is a nice overlook of Seymour lake beside the dam with a bit of a picnic shelter and picnic tables. Across the valley you can see the cliffs and dramatic waterfalls coming off Mt Bishop. The Vicar Lakes trail finds its way up this precipitous mountain side.

This is great news. A loop is always more interesting.

Here are a few shots of the area taken last year around this time. I didn't get one of the bridge , which was just sitting there on the side of the road.

Finally! With the paved trail north and the fisherman's trail south, this makes a nice 27+ km bike route.

No, he didn't mention any specific time of day. I would think it would mean at the beginning of the day.

It's not a trail, it's a gravel road.

We are pleased to now have the Bear Island Bridge open for cyclist and pedestrian travel over the Seymour River. The bridge is located just downstream of the Seymour Falls Dam, and connects the Spur 4 road to the trail network adjacent to the Seymour Fish Hatchery.

I was there 2 hours ago hoping to be the first official visitor. It was still gated.
That honour will be going to someone else.

Ouch. The webpage yesterday said it was closed, today open. Did you ask anyone at the hatchery?

I asked some friendly metro staff but they couldn't raise the right person on the radio. No worries, another reason to go back.

I went through at about 2PM Saturday. The trail up to the road on the east side hasn't been compacted yet, but otherwise, its done.

How do you get to this spot?

This sounds like how it has been for a couple months.

I'm assuming the gate on the west side of the bridge is now unlocked...?

When you arrive at the hatchery, keep going beyond, northwest, on the roads. You go up a hill that bends to the left, then joins the main vehicle road. Turn right and the viewpoint is on the left above and behind the very nice building there. The picnic tables are beyond and below the gazebo, and there is a water fountain and outhouse here. Nice.

Yes, the gate is unlocked and the bridge is open. They are still building some sort of side trail off to the north - hopefully to a view point or something worth a stop.

If anyone is interested I have uploaded the LSCR map to Maprika for others to try. On your smartphone/iphone you will have offline GPS location on the map. You can record your track/stats as well.

Ted Oliver and I crossed the Bear Island Foot Bridge yesterday on our way to do some trailwork on the Mt Bishop Trail. Actually there are two bridges and they do appear to be from the Titanic era(riveted construction).

Last month I spent a day on the trail and with the two of us yesterday we put in a full shift and brushed it out closed to the Vicar Lakes. Jim Sedor, Moe Lamothe and I started work on the trail in 2001 and after finally getting to the peak on my third attempt never went back. NSR did a lot of work after that so it was nice to see some of our old handiwork and walk in Grachman's footprints. If you haven't read the "Grachman Chronicles" here on CT give it a read.

Nice ride yesterday

Trail down to bridge(s) (not 100% complete)

Viewpoint of dam just past the hatchery

GPS says 31km, however, I took a quick detour up Lost (Rolf) Lake road.

Overall this is a great loop. I was out for 2.5 hours and that was at a casual pace with some snack and picture breaks.
