My friend told me they are going to car camp with open fires for free somewhere in northern Kananaskis on the long-weekend. I thought it's not legal until I stumbled upon the following link:

http://www.braggcreek.ca/kananaskis/camp.htm

Free Zone Camping

One of the more common questions we receive at the Elbow Valley Information Centre is "Where can I camp for free?".

Random camping is permissible in some areas. For information regarding this activity, please contact one of the Kananaskis Visitor Information Centres at the following numbers:

Does anyone knows where free camping is permissible? I'll call the given numbers but maybe someone knows more on this forum.

I believe it's 10 km from the nearest major road for most of the provincial parks in Kananaskis. I'm fairly certain that Peter Lougheed is excluded.

Oh but I don't think it's free. I think you are still supposed to get a permit

Thank you. It means random car camping is illegal in EVERY part of Kananaskis? That's what I thought.

Yeah I'm googling for information and finding different stuff. A while ago I spoke to someone at an info center and they told me 10 kms from the nearest road, but I found this just a minute ago:

1km from any road for wildland parks must be true. I remember running into a large group of church based teenagers camping on Wasootch Ridge. They told me the visitor centre ok'd it.

A friend of mine works for Kananskis and you can random camp for free one km from the road in a WILDLAND PROVINCIAL park. This excludes all Kananskis PROVINCIAL parks, i.e., PLPP, Spray lakes, etc. While you can camp for free, they still like it when you let them know at one of the Kananaskis visitor centres where you're going - just to keep track of people though.

You can't random car camp anywhere in Kananaskis as you wouldn't be 1km away from a road. If you want to random car camp, I'd suggest heading south along the Forestry Trunk Road (Hwy 940). Lots of meadows, creeks, etc., to camp along.

I'm pretty sure that down in the Highwood/Livingstone, they have roadside areas where it is legal to camp but there are no facilities and no fees. I've seen many areas where people do camp, and a few where it is even labelled as such, but couldn't give you a specific spot.

It is of course legal to random camp off the road in many places, but I haven't seen anywhere up in the majority of Kananaskis where you can do it on the road.

Unless by 'Northern Kananaskis' they could mean Highway 940 in the other direction? There's stuff up towards Waiparous as well.

Be aware that such areas do tend to be popular with the motorized travel crowd, and the park, drink/burn/shoot crowd.

I ran into a conservation officer on the trail t Picklejar Lakes yesterday so asked him about the random camping. He can confirm that you can random camp for free anywhere in a Wildland Provincial Park, provided you are at least 1km from the nearest road.
