What's access like in these two areas? There appear to be old mining or resource extraction roads of some kind in both areas. Are they closed to motor vehicles or is it possible to drive part of the way with a small 4WD? In each case I'd be planning on driving as far as I can then hiking into the alpine.

I'm certainly expecting to run into motorized users, how crowded does it get in the summer?

Thanks,
Benoit

You could drive right to Blackstone gap. There are some random camp spots there. From there, the old bridge over the Blackstone is gone so you either have to cross the Blackstone (which could be tough right now) to continue on the old road through the gap, or you can stay on the north side and hike through the gap. The gap is about 1.0 km long and I remember pushing my bike through the gap and the riding on the other side was wonderful. It's been about 12 years since I was in there last. The road, 35 to 40 kms to the gap from the trunk road was rough, but not too bad.
I was at the Ruby Creek trailhead two weeks ago. It was very muddy and it is a quad track, but you could ride the 14 kms to the falls. You have to cross the Cardinal River and it was running really high, but should be coming down soon.
I'm heading into the Blackstone this long weekend.

Blackstone Gap and west is supposed to be completely non-motorized as part of the Blackstone-Wapiabi FLUZ so hopefully you don't run into any quads past the end of the road.

I was hiking at Crescent Falls last weekend, and remember seeing a sign and map showing closures of the Blackstone because of a prescribed burn. I don't remember whether it has already happened or not, but probably worth checking with SRD in Rocky Mountain House before you go.

Great area, looking forward to your TR!

Thanks for the info. I'm heading up that way anyway and if Blackstone is closed I'll head up Chungo or Ruby. There are tons of trips to do in that area
