Took Alexa out for an afternoon into Manning Park. I was through there several days earlier and saw that the Rhodos were just beginning to bloom, so I figured by today they should be starting to fully bloom:

The blooms are just starting at Rhodo flats and should be good for another week or two. Some mosquitos out but not to the point that repellant was needed.
Next stop, Manning Park Lodge to feed these guys:

This was a new experience for Alexa

"Hand over the treats kid, we got you surrounded!"

Well that was good for an hour or so. Now for the hiking component; circumnavigating Lightning Lake. There was no snow on the trail, but there still were patches off-trail especially at the far end. Looked like trail crews had already been busy clearing deadfall as there was fresh sawdust where deadfall once lay across the trail, good job guys!

I keep forgetting how much extra time it takes to hike along the north side of the lake because of Spruce Bay. Anyway shortly after passing these canoes by Lone Duck some kids, I imagine from a church camp went out and once out on the water actually started singing "Kum-Ba-Yah". Holy moly I think it's been since like what, the 70's since I've heard anyone sing that song? Kinda freaked me out. At least we came out of there emotionally unscathed.

There was no snow on the trail around lightning lake except a couple small patches at the Skyline Jct. Not sure how it is to Flash or Strike, but I imagine it shouldnt be an issue anymore.

Thanks for the update! I would guess the snow line starts pretty quickley from lake level though.

We were there for the Bird Blitz weekend and hiked as far as the Strike Lake campground on the Saturday. Lots of good birds, but the highlight was this guy we saw on the big rock slide on the south side of Flash Lake.

There had been a few reports of a two-tone bear dragging his rear end like a hyena and we found him pretty easily. Our attention was attracted by a deer running across the rocks, about 100m above the trail, and we looked up to see what it was running from. The deer disappeared quickly (I don't think the bear was really much of a threat) but we stood there for 5-10 minutes while we eyed the bear and he eyed us before he took off slowly up the slope and we continued up the trail.

We didn't see the bear again as we came back via the south side of Flash - some deadfall but the most interesting part was crossing the creeks on the west end of the lake.

Good avalanche slope right behind the Strike campground - literally right down to the outhouse and the food cache.

Will this child wonder why problem wildlife has to be destroyed because they're habituated to human's food, or worse, humans are feeding them?

Is there a BC Parks death squad out there that culls human-food addicted snafflehounds?

Or were they a victim of Crispy Clark's budget cuts?

PLEASE ADVISE.

I tried the "smearing jam on my daughter's face" trick to try enticing a bear for some great photo ops near west gate but to no avail. Had to settle for snafflehound feeding photo ops at the lodge. I believe this particular colony has been kept in existence for the sole purpose of pandering to such touristy activities like feeding the little vermin.
Such activity in this particular case must be condoned by the parks officials or there would at least be signage to the contrary.
