It wouldn't be a big deal on the north shore mountains or in the Sea to Sky Corridor, as the differnce between true north and grid north never varies by more than 0.2 degrees. However, if you were near the same longditude as the Okanagan or Tofino, ignoring the difference would create up to a 250 metre error in your position, and that's if you had zero error in the compass bearings you recorded (edit - from a sighting on something 4 - 5 km away). Given the typical +/- 2 degree error in the compass bearing that would be added to the grid-north error, you might as well not bother, as you would be lucky if your bearing lines met within 400 metres of your true position. Just having a look around would likely give you a far better result. |
