My wife and I were heading for Hedley, just east of Princeton when we stopped for lunch just west of the Manning Park lodge. We no sooner stopped when this huge Raven flew in, I have never known a Raven to come so close. We had a large bag of bird seed with us and threw some down on the ground, he strutted right over and began to eat, at one point my wife put some on the seat right next to her, hesitant at first, he come over, he was tall enough to reach up and start eating- I was slowley walking around snapping pics of him which didnt seem to bother him at all. After about 15 mins another Raven flew on top of a tree near us, there was a lot a "cawing" between them and then it also flew down, he was smaller and I was amazed the big one didnt chase him off. I'm guessing he was an offspring of the big one because at one point they came together and their beeks came together (feeding him?)- this only happened once and I missed the shot darn it. The smaller one flew off but the big one stayed. He finely flew up on the back of my truck, he stayed awhile, making a hollow kind of clucking noise and then flew off. I got over 20 pics, here are four of them, they really dont do him justice. I love encounters like this and this one just blew my mind.
Take care, Ed |

Awesome!
Had a similar encounter the other day. I was in the Smoke Bluffs in Squamish midweek doing some after work climbing and as I scrambled up to get to the anchor to set up a top rope I bumped a tree and a hummingbird fell down and landed on my knee.
I stopped in my tracks, the hummingbird about a foot from my face and we stared at each other for about 15 seconds before it buzzed up and away.
It's little encounters like that that make me appreciate the place that I live in. |

Good to see you post. Wondered where you were. Do you always travel with bird-seed?
Oh, great pictures. |

Ever since a raven flew off with the largest piece from a plate of tenderloins we were preparing for a campfire dinner, I don't like those guys, I don't like them at all.
I too was surprised that they eat meat.
Well done on the pictures, seeking.
And protect all your food when these wily guys are around. |

A ravens primary food source here in Alberta in the winter months is road and winter killed ungulates. You often see them around a moose or deer carcass, feeding in winter |

Ed, happy to see you post and you are active. Great TR, and like others have warned, watch all your food.
Imagine these big birds pack a massive appetite.

| There are some pretty bold ones that hang around the brake checks. I always think of the movie "The Omen" when they get too close. |

Cool encounter, I think I MIGHT like Ravens more than crows. They all look evil to me though. As for this "Hugh" Raven, don't think this is possible as Hugh was at the Mansion all day . |
