A couple of years ago CJB and I did this route. It was a fun, if slightly punishing, day out.

Today I joined a Wanderung hike to Upper Shannon Falls and since I knew the start of the trail wasn't too bad, we carried on past the viewpoint for about 20 mins to a cool bridge over Shannon Creek. The return visit revived my enthusiasm.

At a time, there were some CTers with an interest in the area. Is the interest still out there? I was thinking of maybe heading back with a pair of loppers and some flagging and trying to reclaim the trail.
Assuming there hasn’t been much trail maintenance since, it’s more than a one person (or one trip) job. Takers? Alternatively, are there people who’d like to attempt it as a hike if I organize it?

Cool - sounds like there's sufficient interest.

June 23rd work for everyone?

If you wait a year you can charge the gondola folks for your hard work :)

Key hand off midroute is not a good idea for this area...too easy to miss each other. Should I mention it's an unmarked bushwack?

Do you have trail tools?
In order of importance you will need:

  • machettes - one per person

  • bush lopers (one per person)

  • pick axes (one per two people)

  • bow saws (one per 2 people)

  • chainsaw + accessories (one per party)

Do you have trail markers?
Have you scouted and flagged the proposed route to avoid cliffs, swamps, etc?

I am too busy to help out at the moment but I can lend you my tools - however they are currently stashed quite high on Hat Mtn. If you agree to carry them back up, you can borrow them.

PS. Make sure everyone has work gloves and bring spares.

WW: I think we're talking about doing the trip as a day hike. I may bring my trail tools but realistically, doing the whole thing plus trail clearing wouldn't be a daytrip.

No worries. If you ever run out of projects at the Hat Hilton, consider this one next

Umm, I didn't hear back from anyone so I'd kind of let it go for this weekend.

Could be miserable with current weather - I think I'll stick with something a little less bushy this weekend.

RamblingBull and I are planning on doing this on Saturday. (Perhaps a few minor variations as compared to previous trips - i.e. making a b-line up and over the bumps in between then rather than following the logging roads.)

Anyone wanting to join post/e-mail me.
