I'd like some way to provide input or encouragement to trip reports or commentary without having to make a post. Many times I've read a great report and thought to myself "Yeah!" but didn't feel like writing "great trip" or something that doesn't really have any meaning. I feel a plus1 button could let the poster know that I enjoyed his or her trip report or agreed with their comment.
A minus1 button, of course would do the opposite :) |

| Ya I know but if you're two pages into a discussion no one knows what you're plus1ing unless you quote the entire post, thereby cluttering up the thread. |

^ I use the above method to express approval/inform the poster (usually someone I know) that I've read and enjoyed their report.
It's come up as a suggestion before and I'm not crazy about the thumbs up/thumbs down approach for a forum such as this - too easy to misinterpret or turn into a popularity contest.

"Instead of trip report, post contained incomprehensible ramblings. Would not read again"
