Today I was looking for a quick half-day hike with a fair bit of vertical to get the legs working. I decided to return to the Chief/Shannon Falls area but avoid the inevitable heavy traffic on the Olesen creek route. Instead I started at the trail that starts on the North side of the Chief.

Rather than going for one of the Chief's summits, I followed the high trail around the back side until it finally linked up with the Upper Shannon Falls trail. I went as far as the bluffs above the upper falls but was already past my 2 hour turn around time.

So a couple of quick pictures and back the way we came. I really enjoy the quiet route back there with much of the trail hard against some impressive rock.

All told 1100m vertical and somewhere in the range of 10-12 km. Made up some time on the way back so finished just under my allotted 4 hours.

I think that was the mtn I saw when I visited the other year. Isn't there a sa-weet Horton's down on the hard road, somewhere? I am impressed with the chief. Reminds me of this place. hehe Great trip. You've just re-kindled my tunnel-arch trip at Zion that I had forgotten completely about. yesh!! thanks. |
