In case you are up in the mountains and wonder why a black spot is travelling across the front of the sun, no worries it is not a UFO nor the end of the world... Snap some shots if you can, it will be your only chance in this lifetime.

The planet Venus will make a rare transit across the face of the Sun on June 5. The phenomenon will not occur again for more than a century.

Venus will appear as a small, black dot as it crosses in front of the Sun. The six and a half hour long passage will begin at 2209 Universal time on June 5 (3:09pm BC Time), and most of the world - except much of South America and western Africa - will be able to see it. Experts warn to never look directly at the Sun.

After Tuesday, the wonder of watching the tiny silhouette of Venus glide across the face of the Sun will belong to future generations of astronomers and sky-watchers in the year 2117.

Just giving y'all a "heads up"!

You might have to hike to the top of a mountain to get above the clouds

Not high enough.... You need to get to 25000 feet. Rain every day, all week until Sunday.

Nice and sunny here today, hoping to get some shots, it starts in an hour or so, but will be best view later on. I've been reading a lot of arguements over pointing your camera at the sun doing damage to the sensor. Some say moreso on point and shoots. I can see the lens acting like a magnifying glass I suppose, I don't know the science behind it. I am just going to snap my shots and not point it at the sun for any prolonged length of time.

Do any photo pros have any insight on taking direct shots of the sun? Anyone ever damage their camera?

I really cant see how aiming a point and shoot camera at the sun at full zoom is going to produce anything worth keeping and yes, you may well ruin your sensor in the process. At least try doing it through a welding mask to block out some of the extreme light.

Interesting question though, about how to photograph this, becaue there are photos of the last occurence of this phenomenon out there. Here's a link to some of them, so there must be a way...

Ontario... What a bummer just at the right time the sun went behind thick clouds.
If only I had my BFK on me to cut throught the clouds :(.

Right now should be prime time, so go look outside everyone! Unless of course you are socked in with cloud.

Those are neat photos-I wish we weren't so buried in cloud so often here, we seem to miss so many of the big celestial events. Oh well! (It's a trade-off for a milder winter, I suppose!)
