Has anyone here been up to Della lake in the past couple years? I understand the 'trail' is a bit of a scramble but would like some specific info on where the access point is relative to the falls. From what I can gather it is on the left side but how far left?
Thanks! |

My last trip to Della Lk from the base of Della falls was in 1999. We went up an obvious route to the climbers left of the falls. This was during an August snowpack that was deep enough to leave only a foot of the outhouses sticking above, so the devils club was still packed down under. The route up was steep, but with lots of bush to grab.
Going up to Love Lake is on better terrain and gets higher, so you have really nice views looking down on Della Lk & falls and eyeball level to Nine Peaks. Love Lk with Mt Septimus above is also a pretty nice view.
As of last week, it was reported that the trail into Della Falls was still under a ton of snow. |

| Thanks, I won't be going up until the end of July. I have heard enough stories about the Della lake trail that I was getting half convinced there are two trails. Some describe it as harrowing, others as a basic scramble. Possibly just different perceptions of risk. |

I'm wondering what the reason is that you want to get to Della Lake. Have you been up there before and already done the Love Lake side? Or are you wanting to head up to Nine Peaks or Big Interior?
I've personally not gone up to Della Lake before but have a friend who did last year. From his photos and stories it didn't look that nice compared to the Love Lake side. Both times I've been up I went up the Love Lake route and can say that the views from up there of the falls/surrounding mountains are spectacular, and Love Lake sitting right below Mt.Septimus is also a great spot. If you've never been up there before I'd definitely recommend heading up to Love Lake instead.
But if you've already been there/done that or just have your mind set on Della Lake I can ask my buddy for a bit more info on the route he took up for you. Either way its a beautiful area and you'll have lots of fun up there. |

Thanks Lonny. Yes, if conditions are right I hope to attempt Nine Peaks via this route.
If we decide against going up to the pass, once at Della Lake, we will have a day to head into Love Lake. I have heard of a bunch of cool sites up in the Love Lake area. AMAZING how hard those prospectors must have worked. |

When I went up 9 Peaks, a few years ago, I did it as a three day trip. Day one up to Bedwell Lakes & over to Big Interior, where we camped. Day two BI to 9P summit & back, packed up camp and dropped down to the big circe below BI. Last day a leisurely hike out. Stronger hikers could likely do it in two days.
I think doing it from Della falls would be feasible. In fact, on my 1999 trip, two of us packed ice axes, crampons & rope up to Della Lk, but got lazy and napped in the sun, while the young guys caught trout in the lake.
E-mail me if you'd like copies of either or both trip reports, and a few photos. |

Was up at the top end of Great Central a few weeks back and the lake itself is still frozen over. Banks of the north tip of the lake had 3-5 feet of snow still. It is quite likely that even by the end of July you won't get right up to the lake.
And for what it's worth, Love lake is prettier. |
