I've moved up to Rossland for the summer and am hoping to get out for some hiking... Unfortunately I don't know anyone and am reluctant to go alone. So, I figured I'd make a post here to see if anyone knows about local hiking clubs and/or the best way I can get to know some fellow hikers! I'm 27 and have done a fair amount of stuff around Vancouver with the UBC outdoors club, am really hoping to get up into the alpine around some of the area's provincial parks... Would really love to se Kokanee at some point.

Used to live out there-old glory was a great dayhike!

Kokanee Glr is a great park too. Ride the rail trails also, Nelson-Salmo & Slocan city-South Slocan junction. http://www.spiritof2010trail.ca/RailTrail.aspx?id=slocan

Valhalla Provincial Park on the Gwillim Lakes and Drinnon Pass side is spectacular. Gimli Ridge is so much fun.

It's a bit of a trip from Rossland - two hours up logging roads from Cooper Creek which is half an hour north of Kaslo - but I recommend Monica Meadows. Make it an easy overnight backpack to make it worth the drive.

Road access varies. Make sure to protect your vehicle with chicken wire.

Generally, I gotta say road access sucks. I was up - or at least attempting to get up - into the Valkyrs today. Can drive to somewhere between 4,200 and 4,400 feet. Snow is not too bad for walking. The alder is brutal.

Monica Meadows is stellar.

That it does, but last word I heard is that access conflict has been resolved, and the road was OK. Some years ago we made it to the TH (and to Jumbo Pass TH) with a minivan. And we had no problems with porkies (stayed 2 nites, no chicken wire).

A couple nights with no porcupine nibbles is no guarantee against future nibbles.

A few years ago while hiking at Drinnon Lake in the Valhallas, I talked to a fellow who mentioned that this person parked his truck at the Monica Meadows trailhead and when he came back after doing a backpack he found that the porcupines had eaten through the brakeline. He had to use low range on his 4x4 to crawl down the steep mountain road.
