I knew I had to be in Vancouver at 6:30pm Saturday night but I really wanted to check out the Golden Ears trail and see just how far I could make it before I ran out of time or energy. I had never been past Gold Creek Lookout before so it was an adventure for sure. Once to the Gold creek lookout the trail disappears and reappears fairly often. This trail could sure use some trail markers at more frequent intervals. It is sure interesting that you hike along old logging roads and skid roads then loose them just to pop out on a different one going in different locations. Logging sure was prevalent on our local slopes once upon a time! As I got near Alder Flats and onto the old bridges and boardwalks I realized that there is going to be some major trail work needed in the next 5 to 10 years yikes! Alder Flats looks like a lovely place to camp if you do not have to deal with yahoos for sure. The Views from alder flats of the Ears is breathtaking! After visiting with a very very friendly Jack Russell I headed back on the trail towards the Ears. I made my way up the steep skid road heading up to the Ears only hitting snow near the top of the road. I stopped at the end of the road where the trail heads straight up some stairs as I was out of time. Seemed like a logical spot for lunch anyways! I thought I started late at 9am on the trail but I only saw 4 people on the way up. On the way down I saw dozens of people.

My GPS is in the shop so I only have spotty locations (from my spot) of where I hiked. I would love to know the actual kms and elevation I hiked so if anyone has a GPS track of the trail that they would be willing to send me I would appreciate it.

Due to zeljkok and his GPS track and a bit of mine and my spot data I have worked out my distances and elevation gain. Thanks a ton zeljkok! I hiked in 15.4km round trip.

I have to say, I don't really share your experience of that section of trail being poorly marked but I guess I can see why it's not always terribly obvious, Alder flats is one of my favourite day trips. I haven't been up the switchback since I was 12. Probably should get on that.

Thanks for the nice mountain pics! Never get tired of mountain porn.

You got to about the 7.2 to 7.5 km approximately, can not give you elevation though. There are mileage markers along the trail, at least when I was there last time.

There are but I didn't see one near where I stopped.

I am reasonably certain I know where you turned off. It is a little clearing (old helipad by some info), with a nice bench. This is also start of real elevation gain. The altitude there according to my GPS was ~680m, Karvitk is right about the distance.

I can send you gdb file if you want, but there is break near Gold Creek as I lost reception.

Re Trail Markings I also didn't find them bad at all. Due to late start (11:30 am) I summited at 5 pm & had to hike out entire section from Aldar Flats by headlamp, but didn't have any problems. This was in September 2010.

The mountain labelled in your Flickr photos as Golden Ears is actually Edge Peak:

This. You actually can't see Golden Ears from down there.

Here is a view of Golden Ears from the 9.5 to 10 km mark; (June 9/05).

For your interest, also can compare snow conditions as that one we had low snow levels.

Hey Rocker man I think we met you on your way down.

We made it to the top, the ridge was super icy and we started a few size one wet slabs. Not ideal conditions!

Gotta love meeting people through the site after hikes haha.

I am glad I was out of time then as being solo that would be very bad conditions for sure!
