Hi everyone, could you please confirm the directions for the trailhead since there are conflicting instruction in different places. A
1. As far as I undersand, the trailhead is on the highway, so clubtread description is outdated. Is this true?
http://www.clubtread.com/routes/Route.aspx?Route=154
2. Are there 2 traisl for summer and for winter? New 103 hikes says they are the same now, but description on livetrails says the winter trail is few hundred meters before summer.
http://livetrails.com/trail/2652/Vantage_Peak
3. New edition of 103 hikes say go right once you reach logging road. I've read it is a mistake and it should be left, but the report was from summer. Could it be that the boook describes winter route?

I would greatly appreciate any hint for the current route.

Trailhead is on the highway, not too far after the salt shed. Summer trail details are in my TR here:

Can't speak for the winter trail, but I assume it follows the creek more (it branches off left from the signed summer trail shortly after the log bridge).

Here, this will help.

Red is the hike and trailhead where you park.

Blue is the road up to Rohr/Marriott. The salt shed is just to the left of that.

Thanks, hopefully there would be enough tacks to find winter route.

This time of year, with all the valley melt, it's probably not a good idea to follow the winter route (assuming it does follow the creek) - I'd expect there to be a lot of open water, or at the very least weak snow bridges over running water...

yea. When you get to the end of the road instead of crossing the creek take a left and follow the ski/boot tracks. it will take you though and open forest, fairly flat. follow it as if you are headed for Vantage. you can come around the back of that horn and into the hut.

i have been up several times and have never seen trailmarkers for the winter route. the route is often well set and may still be able to follow parts of it, though not sure how much it has melted up there. even with fresh snow and in the middle of the night it is easy enough to find your way up the valley (i've never tried the summer route).

the winter route starts off of a wide spot on the duffey and there is some flagging until shortly after crossing the creek. then you make your way throught the forest to a logging road which you follow (a short cut is marked to cut off a section of road) until the valley starts closing in which is when you reenter the forest and follow the creek (starting on the east side of it). i think the summer route follws it earlier from the west side?

as Ryan mentioned there may be melted snowbridges making creek crossing difficult but i have travelled up on the east and avoided most crossings

Ryan, you are right with the yellow and blue lines, and with the parking. But the winter trail is on the other side of those trees.

See my attached map I draw for you guys. I also include a close up of the parking area, so you can see it will be an obvious spot that can take up to 20 cars. Study this carefuly, so you can recognize the road that is above the cut block you will hike up, you will go left from that route when it curves right. Basically, always travel South.

I skied up there last Saturday (May 19, 2012) and there is tons of snow. The Cerise creek is nicely filed in with mostly strong bridges, so you should be fine. However, later in the day as the snow gets soft be careful, early morning should be no problem.

Creek crossings:

Right off the parking lot, you go down off the road and in about 2min you will reach a nice bridge over the creek. Another crossing is about 5min later but it was kind of washed out last week but I found a log across about 100m down the creek, needed to horse-back ride it but definitely doable.

If you have more questions let me know, I know the area well, mostly in the winter though. For photos how it looks up on the glaciers and peaks you can see my trip report here - http://www.skintrack.com/trip-reports-conditions/skiing-joffre-matier-slalok-in-5h-58min/

This is my first post but I know the area well.

Hope this helps and have a good trip.

Skintrack: my red line is the actual GPS track from our hike in to Vantage, which followed the Cerise summer trail.

Shortly after the bridge after the lot (the one we're all talking about) you hit a junction and sign - right is the summer trail (which we followed). See pic:
http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=40155

Skin's red track must show the winter route, which is left (or more like straight from my recollection) at the above junction.

Yes, mine is the winter route which is still in good shape to follow right now. I don't really know anyone who follows the summer trail between mid-Dec to like mid-May.

And as I said, I know it there well but mostly in winter :)
