i too found the site though google hits. just before xmas i had gone to a friends house for a visit. while in the bathroom i noticed she had a scale. i hadn't actually stepped on a scale in a couple of years (cause i don't believe in them!). well.....after i saw the number on dial (and after i regained consciousness) i thought "i've got to do something about this". Actually it was more like "OH MY GOD....I'VE GOT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS" said in a sorta shreak-like voice. So anyhow i joined a gym on commercial drive. my first session consisted of almost passing out from 20 minutes on the treadmill (at a very very low setting). but i kept going on!

after a couple of weeks i thought maybe i was in good enough shape to try snowshoeing. So i did a google search for "snowshoe rentals vancouver". A number of CT message threads came up. I immediately noticed the message board. And being the type of person that just dives into situations, I made a profile and signed up for the first thing i saw that looked managable. That was dog mountain and dinky peak in january. tons of fun was had. and i've been hooked ever since.

thanks longshadow for the great site, which is very welcoming to newcomers. this newbie appreciates that!

I heard about CT from Clayton back when he had his outdoor store - Little Mountain - in Abbotsford. It's gone now but obviously CT is alive and well

Hey Patrick! I've known you for 13 years now! If only I had known you were such a hiking keener.

I found CT when I was searching for info on crossing Post Creek on the way to Greendrop Lake. No one helped me with my water level question, but I stuck around anyways.

Amazing! That's exactly what I was wondering. 3 million hits in Jan, up from 300k a year earlier. Wow.

It was in late 2001, when I moved back from the Rockies. I started, while over in Banff, a community segment called "Bow Valley Backpackers" on TELUS. Soon after I arrived, the company cancelled all free rides, including the Hiking BC where I was registered prior to. We were all invited (if I remember correctly) to see about Club Tread. So I did and signed up.

I found CT through a hiking buddy planning the Chilkoot which we did in August 2003. There was a discussion thread on CT which we discovered and it helped us alot. We saw LongShadow's trip report just before we left.

Great topic Mick!

I found CT by stumbling across it when I was searching for hiking clubs and general hiking info on the internet. I had a major upheaval in my life a few years ago that led me to different challenges and along the way I discovered a new appreciation for the outdoors and the different pleasures it brings. Since I could not convince my friends to take up hiking along with me (they all have moved on to 5th wheel trailer camping and think that a good workout is an hour walk ), I was motivated to search for people with much more of a "kindred spirit" nature.

I'm not sure how long it actually took me to post, and although I did remain an observer rather than a participant for some time, I am sooo glad I moved past that because I have met some great hiking and backpacking friends.

And the fun just goes on and on and on . .

I stumbled on CT through a search for hiking clubs in the vancouver area. I had found & joined a couple of other hiking groups in the past year but the culture just wasn't doing it for me. Once I created a profile on here I think I hit my first hike the week after ... ever since then I've met up with various groups on here every week-end and have had loads of fun! This is a way more relaxed atmosphere and fun place to "talk shop" & organize/join events. Exchange of information is great and the various levels of events makes it easy for everyone to get out & be outside

Either looking for info concerning local hiking trails (reviews/opinions) or a review on a perticular water filter.... i think it was the former.

Very interesting thread! I can't specifically remember how it came to be, but Jim and I had discussed a few things, and he had done some work on another outdoor site briefly before the launch of clubtread. (OutdoorTrek?)
I was thankful for Jim to adopt the members I had on Hiking BC (MyBC.com)and migrate the board and some of the content to his site.
I recall Jim mentioning that I may have been the "first" offical member of CT (YAY!) upon its creation.
Its a very wonderful piece of work that has transpired here, resulting in education, friendships and positive experiences (for the most part).
I know I haven't been active on here the last year due to alot of changes in my life, but I keep tabs here and occasionally laugh out loud at some of the crazy humor that is shared on here.

Very nice to see the growth of such a positive entity on the internet.
Bravo Jim, and to all the members which make the website what it is.
Cheers!

Wow, this is an awesome thread .

I found CT while doing a google search for water filter information. After reading some of the posts here, I decided to lurk for a bit and see what else developed. After determining that the board was 'newbie' safe (man, you ever tried posting to some other sites/boards - talk about hostile!) I created a profile and took the plunge.

Before long I was posting messages with reckless abandon, talking about Sponge Bob Boxers, and out hiking the Stein. Ah, 'tis good to be home

Good Topic.

I found Club Tread from a link from someone's homepage. I was trying to get more info on building an igloo and stumbled on someone's page who described making a device for making the blocks out of snow.

I made and tried the device during last snowfall but there wasn't enough snow to complete the igloo in my back yard.

Although the igloo did't work out, my dog still seemed to enjoy it a week later!

An igloo-hilarious photo! As an offshoot of this topic, try doing a Google search of any topic you've posted up on.Sometimes when it comes up in short form your nickname gets associated with a fragmented or incorrect opinion."What, that's not exactly what I said..."If anyone doesn't understand me here,oh well...

While surfing for BC hiking sites, I stumbled on a geo-caching web site with some posts and/or links by Spidergirl. Went to her site and then found a link to Club Tread.

I was also looking for hiking clubs. I had been to a meeting for the Inside Edge club and just didn't feel like it was my scene. Everyone was really nice, just not for me.
I was looking for people to hike during the week with as I work in a restaurant and always work weekends. Plus just wanted to meet more people who were into the outdoors.
I was so impressed with this site and still am. It is so wonderful to have this kind of forum to meet people, share ideas and collect info. Still trying to get on more mid week hikes though!!
Hey LongShadow. Of the two guys I went cycling with a couple of weeks ago, one of them has a job which is to get web sites higher up in the google searches. Do you want me to find out for you???
Thanks for a wonderful site!!

I seem to remember that Outdoorguy, Spidergirl and I were going to strike out on our own when Telus dumped Outdoorguy's Hiking BC site. Thanks to Longshadow he had the foundation already built. It is nice to see how it has improved over the years. Good job Jim! I may not be the most active person on this site but it is good to know it is here when I have the to urge to add my $0.02 . It is rather interesting that I am making only my 100th post on a site that we were thinking of starting. It is also good that Kerry, Julia and I are still active on the 'Net and in the outdoors. Thanks Outdoorguy for pointing out CT to me. It is a nice "community" that Jim has created for the hiking culture.
Cheers!

Barry
