I was just on the Manning web site and discovered it will now cost me $5.00 per person, per night, to stay at Mowich, Buckhorn, Nicomen, ect. I would give my nod of approval if I felt the monies collected would go to trail maintanence, conservation, and such, but history dictates that these things are merely cash-grabs.
If I was the real "Moses", I'd part Georgia Strait and walk on over to Victoria and say to the Pharoh "Let my people go!!!(hiking for free, please.)"

If there were more effective lobbying actions against these kind of actions then solutions would be found but unfortunately outdoors people are on the whole not very effective lobbyists.

Welcome to the new reality. I deal with parks people, both provincial and federal, who are asked to maintain continuing levels of service, maintenance, and research while coping with reduced staff and resources. Managers have been told to seek alternate sources of revenue as the national and provincial troughs are meager.
As to whether or not more tax dollars need to be directed to parks is another debate. As far as I know, and have been told by park personnel, the revenue garnered through camping fees is reinvested in the park itself. Even with that, it is a struggle to provide the minimum of services.

| This should not come as any surprise so anyone. For a long time now we have been asked to do more with less. Ever try to get ahold of someone at Air Canada? You'll be on hold for a LONG while. Ever needed to talk to someone at Visa about a suspicious charge? Again, be prepared to be on hold for a while. Ditto for the Royal Bank, or any service oriented industry. It sucks, but it's reality. |

I've been cruising the Manning Park websites (Provincial Park and Manning Park resort) and can't find any referece to said backcountry fees. It is hidden somewhere?

Hey Nut. Look at the provincial government site at www.gov.bc.ca/bcparks, follow the links to E.C Manning park, then scroll down till you see Back-Country Camping Fees. I'm afraid that it is a reality for the coming hiking season. Boo-Hoo. One of the the reasons I love this sport/hobby/lifestyle is, once you get all your stuff, it's pretty much free. I don't want to feel like I'm being taxed to death on the trail as well as in the city. I go to the mountains to escape from all this cr*p. Shouldn't my 70% taxes that I already pay cover some trail maintanence?

quote: There is a day-use vehicle parking fee of $1.00/vehicle for the first hour OR $3.00 or $5.00/vehicle/day at 28 parks on Vancouver Island and in the Lower Mainland.
Park users can purchase an annual parking pass, which will allow unlimited vehicle parking in all 28 parks, for a cost of $50 for the 2004 camping season. The pass is scheduled to increase to $75 in April of this year.
well, well, well.... better pick mine up before April!
and here's the link to the fees for next year... so much for new gear.... http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/fees/userfees.pdf
Hmmm can't get the pasted version of the link to work, it has added characters when posted. Why is that Jim?

ah-ha Paste the above in your browser and get rid of the spacing around the "/ / wlap w" and you'll have your link |

I've noticed that too with there site and it's the only site that I know of that does that. Could it be a security thing or something?

I noticed on their website that Widgeon Creek campsite as well as the three Pitt Lake Marine Park campsites are now paid sites!
