Hi everyone! I am planning to go to elfin lake on 21. I am just wondering do I need snowshoes to hike up there? Can I just have winter gaitors on with hiking shoes? I will drive my Focus wagon with chains on, is it ok? Thanks!

Hi Patrick,

The hike in the winter is longer than in the summer. The winter route goes on top of the ridge, whereas the summer route goes along the side of the ridge. You will get more views in the winter (good) but the snow slows progress, expect your times to be 2x to 3x longer than in the summer.

You will need snowshoes on the 21st if there has been fresh snow the week before. Check your weather forecasts carefully. You don't want to be post-holing all the way there. That will bring your trip time closer to 3x if you do that...

Re chains - check the weather. If you have warm weather followed by freezing, chains may not be of much help!! (See our report from 3 weeks ago - just search for Elfin Lakes here on CT)

cheers - C Wall

though the bottom path from the parking lot to red heather meadows is usually groomed by high traffic i would still highly recommend snowshoes, and mandatory if you plan on going all the way up!
have fun

Hi ya'll,

I was just up at the Elfin Lake hut this past weekend. A mob scene. Beaucoups du neige!! Mind-blowing views. Snowshoes is a must. Don't even bother going without. No tracks or travel on N side ridge; everyone using usual S side route. Road up is icy near trail head sharp turn, and 1/2 vehicles couldn't make it up, even with chains; parked below. We walked up from there. Have fun! It's awesome right now!!

VP on Broadway also rents snowshoes for 9 bucks...MSR denali's like MEC. MEC rental is 12 dollars I believe, and includes poles, VP is 9 bucks, and doesn't include poles. If you don't need to rent poles, VP is the cheaper way to go.

VP is Valhalla Pure and it's a few storefronts west of MEC, just on the other side of Columbia. Same side of the Street. Can't miss it.
