With all of this enthusiasm for avalanche awareness and training, I wonder if anyone else has looked at their life insurance policies regarding avalanches? When my policy came up for renewal at the end of last month Mrs. Hiker Boy did some inquiries. Looks like I'm covered. It always pays to check these things out and it's nice to be covered both on the education and the insurance ends.

Mrs. HB is my kinda lady. Make sure the house is paid off, kids education taken care of, and a 6-month tropical vacation every year with Paco the cabana boy.

I know when we've gotten optional insurance for travelling to the US it listed all sorts of perils that were not covered. Bungy jumping was the only one I remember, but it was quite a list.

Your policy specifically states you are covered if you are killed in an avalanche?

No, it basically covers me for everything but suicide. Avalanches would have to be specifically excluded (Which it isn't! ) for me not to be covered. Apparently policies deal in exclusions.

Good point to consider especially for those out of province and out of country treks - general and medical coverage !! One rolled ankle in the U.S. could be very expensive without it !!
