Hello, I had posted a thread awhile back about potential backpack ideas in Strathcona. A little change in plans now and looks like 2 day hikes are all that will be possible now. Coming from the north end of the island. This will be at the end of July this summer.
Any suggestions for 2 day hikes that one can't live without in Strathcona? I am experienced and in good shape but my hiking partner is less so. Something of moderate strenuousness, hopefully not too many crowds and at least some views.....
Thanks, Carrie |

| Baby Bedwell is a really cool place but its a bit of a grind to get there. Worth it and usually not too many people. The day hikes out of Washington parking lot are easy but expect lots of people. |

I think the OP is asking about 2 day hikes and not overnight trips that are 2 days.
But, I definantly would include the Paradise Meadows trails. The trails will be "busy" but if you get out past Lake Helen McKenzie the crowds do thin out a bit.
There is a nice loop trail out to Kwai Lake that makes for a good day hike. There is some up/hilly hiking but it isnt too bad with only a day pack. If coming via the west side of Lake Helen McKenzie, just past the Ranger Station at the intersection to Kwai or Circlet, take the trail to Circlet... Hairtigger Lake is just a few minutes down the trail and if I recall some very nice views of the Mt. Albert Edward and the ridge. This loop is about 14KM (add 1km with the side trip to Hairtrigger).
And depending on how things are going it is possible to day trip to Circlet and return via Kwai and a very obvious intersection that you will come across. Circlet is ~10KM one way, ~22km if done as a loop.
There are other day trip options/side trips for the Kwai loop... near Kwai there is a trail to the Cruickshank Canyon lookout and some very beautiful lakes along the way. The website says that this is 1.5km one way from Kwai but I recall it being a bit longer... but not too bad. There are also some unofficial trails that go around the lakes; if interesteted I should be able to find some gps tracks.
More details are here... http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/strath/forbid.html
I've spent less time on the trails down along Buttle Lake but a drive down there would be worth while and doing some of the smaller hikes along the way or doing a longer one (ie Bedwell Lake) |
