Wow its been a long time. First trip of the year for me. My friend Kyle and I chose to attempt a summit camp on the goldenEars. Turns out there is still 15-20 feet of snow up there. The emergency shelter was non existent "fully burred in snow!"

We started around 8:30am and with full over night loads it took about 8.5 hours to make it to the summit using the Alder flats route.

Snow started half way up the trail after leaving alder flats long before the steep part gaining the ridge.

It was really cool up there because we could see every thing! I had a great time spotting the Terarosa Glacier off in the distance where I had the chance to spend 10 days last year, the mamquam ice field, some of the tantulus range, baker and every thing in between.

Here area a couple photos and a video.

Enjoy:

Wow!! The sunrise is my favorite! So glad someone other than me was able to brave the freezing cold and bring us that amazing shot. Sunrise to me, is always a renewal; the first splash of Eden. It always seem to be that chilly moment right as the sun peaks over the horizon. My bucket list? to go watch the sunrise on the beach in costa Rica and race to the mountain where you can see both the oceans at once, then head to the west coast to watch it set in the Pacific. ahhhh....
I'm going to watch the video, now. thanks for the views at the top O' the world!

Awesome spectacle of a Video, super well done!

A very interesting, informative, and colorful video...

How was the snow, hard and icy, or plenty of softer stuff to make steps ? Wonder if someone could make it up there with micro-spikes.

We had no snow shoes, no crampons just ice axe for the few sections that where very steep. The snow was semi soft. Not bad at all. It was great that some one had been up in the last few days and we used those snow shoe steps as to not sink so much on the way up.

On the way down we where sinking shin deep most steps, but going down hill it wasn't so bad.

There where a few spots where if we lost it we would have slid over cliffs. Good thing we didnt. It was simply a matter of keeping three points and making sure to be safe and slow.

Good times.

Very nice. Cool video.
My opinion also but I prefer to do it in summer without so much snow.

Nice work! I did a similar overnighter in 1990-something, in similar weather. It was a great trip, with a spectacular camping location.

Sick summit camp!!! I love your style Matt! Summit camping is actually very popular for some extreme climbers in France.
