After my failed attempt on Outram two weeks ago I was eager to make another try at it. Armed with new boots and a much more promising weather forecast, I decided that today was the day.
I left Vancouver early (very early) and arrived at the trailhead at 6:15. The snow line seemed to have moved up considerably and I made great time through the trees. I stopped just before crossing the creek to apply the first round of SPF60. Hopped across the creek and continued up the steepening slopes. The snow conditions were perfect and made for great climbing with the crampons. I quickly passed my turn-around point from two weeks ago. Only took 2hrs this time in these conditions, compared to over 3 hours last time. Pretty soon I was about to clear the trees, but not before stopping to apply a second layer of sunscreen. Even though the sun was high in the sky, the snow was still holding firm, so I decided there was no point carrying the snowshoes any further. Ditched them by a well flagged tree, and then it was onwards up and over the talus slopes to the summit!
I arrived on the summit around 11:45, after four and a half hours of hiking. Blue skies all round and incredible vistas in every direction. Good thing I remembered to bring the binoculars this trip.
Hung out on the summit for about 45 minutes then started back down. By now about 5 or 6 inches of snow had softened up, allowing for some nice glissading. Back in the car around 2:45. |

Sweet trip man - I'm glad to hear you came back and finished it off on such a great day. The ascent time is nothing to scoff at either |

Thanks. I think the conditions were probably the best you could ask for. Could still see the tracks you guys left a few weeks ago, but there was no post-holing this time around! |
