Remind me never to go there again on a hot weekend.
My hikes usually consist of seeing No one, so when hiking down and seeing 25 + people going up was quite the shock.
Though it definitely was a good kicker to start the hiking season with.

Yeah this is a popular trail. I would even go as far as saying that 25+ isn't that bad, for a warm day on Prairie Mountain. It's like Bragg Creek's Yamnuska. I don't see much appeal to it. I think most just do it for exercise.

why dont you stick to the busy trails, then all the people can scare the bears away and you wont have to carry your 12 gauge.

Prairie Mtn? It's a great little mountain from about November to May to keep in shape on.
I hiked it on Saturday, no ticks, beautiful blue sky weather, no wind on top, so lounged around for 45 minutes.
Then one can go for bigger efforts once the snow is all gone further west.

Nmcan84 you can go sit on a cactus.

I plan to get out next Sunday as well, anyone have any suggestions of where to go?
More Kananaskis area, I prefer to keep it closer to town so I can enjoy more of my lone day off.

It's the local Grouse Grind. It's a great one to do over the off-season to keep your legs in shape when everything else is snowed in. It's not a good place to seek solitude. Though if you try one of ascents up the other ridges (instead of the main trail), you'll probably only see people briefly at the top.
Heart, Baldy, and Ha Ling are all good and close, but also likely to be similar in peopledness. Wasootch Peak would get you a little further off the track, as would either peak or Wendell, or Association Peak, if you're up for a long day.
Door Jamb and Loder do get regular use, but on a much lower level, and Exshaw Ridge doesn't see a lot of people.

I would not recommend Association Peak. Unless you really just want to tag a named summit, there's nothing really that great about it. The views are nice, but nothing you can't get from other nearby summits. I would recommend Black Rock Mountain over Association Peak.

Prairie's good exercise and once the gates open on the fifteenth people will scatter to other trails. I hiked it on May 6 and was also surprised by the number of people... some of whom had me rehearsing how to do CPR in my head as I passed them. Solitude is easy to find, just take a trail or ridge that isn't featured on a GemTrek or one that crosses even a modest creek or similar "obstacle" and you'll be good to go.

But if you really don't like people, it's a decent shot.
I usually see at least one other party on Black Rock. Association doesn't often see more than one group in a day. :)

Thank you,I appreciate the input.
Does anyone know the conditions for Ha Ling? I haven't been that far west in a bit.

Sounds like a fair crowd getting out for the first time of the season, with no prior warmup and so out of shape..

wildtrekker:

I went up East End of Rundle on May 6th, and took some descent shot on Ha Ling.

Ha Ling: Some snow in the trees (don't know how deep), snow free on the alpine
EEOR: snow free below treeline, some snow on the upper slope

Stevensong- Thanks a lot. I will definitely go for it. I might get in two peaks this weekend or even for this month before I head south.

Watch out for ticks on East End of Rundle. I have encountered them in the month of May before.

Ha Ling for whatever reason I have not encountered ticks on that one in the spring season.

Be aware that you will see more than 25 people on Ha Ling if the weather's decent.
If you do Ha Ling, make sure to do Miner's Peak as well. The ascent is the same until the last bit at the top, and the peak is much less populated. It's good to get in both, but do lunch on the saddle at Miner's.
Some photos
