Has anyone tried one of these things?

Obviously it's got a few shortcomings and it's not going to be your only water treatment method. However, I could imagine using it on certain day hikes where you want to travel light and fast and will have access to water sources along the way.

It claims to be only 56 grams and it's only $20.

As far as I could tell this was just a filter with a spout. I really don't see the advantage of this over filtered water bottles etc.

After reading the brochure, one advantage is the longer filter life rated at 1000 litres vs Katadyn filtered bottle approx 100 litres and Pristine filtered bottle rated at 150 litres.
The straw-like feature enables drinking from a very small pool of water. The 0.2 micron pore size does not eliminate viruses but that's not much of a problem here.

I've used a similar "survival straw". I liked being able to pull it out of a pocket to drink from a creek, rather than undoing my pack to get out my bottle etc... I also liked sitting/camping around a questionable water source, filling my bottle, and using the straw to drink from the bottle, so not having to pump or treat as much water. I really liked mine, but it broke.

Well isn't that ironic, the more I learn about google the more I hate... While reading this thread earlier today I was logged into gmail. Then I go and visit the cougar thread and click a link in a recent post pointing to the actual news story. What do I see over on the right? An advertisement by google for lifestraw, pointing to this website first time I've ever seen it(Which is interesting and has videos):

I don't think I like google tracking everywhere I go, I don't have anything to hide but it truely is none of their business. I hope they are reading this now .

Not a bad idea...I have had to drink out of water catch tanks in the slickrock, before.
lightweight and easy to use in my camelbak daypack. I don't do overnighters and don't carry a tent or sleeping bag. I would sleep in a cave, down here or alcove on the southeasterly slope. But, the lifestraw sounds pretty good. One time use, I imagine. I would probably still suck it up, spit it into my camelbak til it was full and then, drop in my purify tablets, as well. How does that sound? I don't carry a filter with me. I just have emergency purify tablets that are common at any outdoor/camp store.

good post. thanks.

This product seems excellent, in several ways, it looks like it works great, is tiny and doesn't take up much space in a backpack, is lightweight, has won awards, and more.

For $20 it looks like a life saver, a good investment on ones life to throw in their backpack.

You can turn that off in your account settings. A little button that tells them to cater ads to your search history. It doesn't bother me, personally.

I guess Bass Pro Shops carries these for $20. For anyone that's in Calgary, this place and an outdoor store in Canmore is the only place I've been able to find them at. I might go after work today and pick one up.
