Hey Out THere,

Just trying to dig up some good directions from the Sea to Sky hwy near Whistler for Metal Dome. I assume it's via a turnoff for the Brandywine Forest Service road. Hear there are lot's of right's and left's. Where to park and where to start snowshoeing from would be very helpful too as well as basic direction's to summit. Depend's on the snowline wherever that is these day's. Maybe somebody knows. Was trying to access the search engine for additional info but all I come up with is '500 error' Seem's the search engine is inoperative. Could be my crappy computer though

Thanks in advance

Tried that. Didn't help so much. Looks like my Maproad Explorer book shows a junction with a road going to the left that connects from above to the Brandywine Meadows trail if you were looking at ascending Brandywine Mt. that way. At that same junction (where I presume there's a snowmobilers cabin could be wrong) my mapbook show's staying to the right with a s curve or two then a trail heading towards Metal Dome pretty much directly. Hoping this is correct. Anybody know? Anybody know how far one can drive with either two or four wheel drive towards the snowmobile cabin for example? Perhaps someone's been lately?

It's been a while since we've been up there ...

http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=26613

I think we went just past the sledders cabin then headed straight up the cut block. Found the swath that was left by the cat tracks and followed that up to the alpine .. easy from there as the summit is somewhat in view.

If you have the Scrambles book follow the directions to Brandywine but I really doubt you'll be able to drive past the turnoff to the "4wd" section that goes to your right off of the main road. There's a big parking area there with an outhouse. Walk up that road until you reach the sledders cabin and head up the cutblock (don't know where the road ends ... it might switch back to where we cut up)

Hope that helps some ...

Your route description is more or less correct, but I doubt you'll get very far up from the highway, maybe a few km.

If you want to go in from the Callaghan side see here: http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Metal_Dome

We have yet to try that one (route), with a warm weekend, where would you rate hazard levels, or is it visible and determined as you go?

Hey ScottN,

Thought about that route briefly. Don't know the area at all other then Callaghan Lake campground so I'll just go with the Brandywine fsr description this time anyway. Get to know the lay of the land first so to speak.

Thanks Spunky,

Kind a confirmed what I suspected more or less concerning the road and the route. The search engine seem's to be functioning again so I was able to bone up on info in the area last night. I actually did check out the Scrambles book yesterday too having thought the same source might be helpful. Seem's there's three different route's from Brandywine FSR. Sraight up from the meadows, or from the upper road to connect to just above the meadows more or less and finally from the cabin straight up like you and AT must have done earlier. Any idea of the K's involved from say the cabin just for reference sake?

If you can get to the sledders cabin or close, its a fairly easy and enjoyable way in.
We hiked the trail from much lower once, and it sucked, wet and sloppy..

Yeah I doubt we'll make it to the cabin on wheels at this point in time with it being at around 4200 ft. according to what I just read in one of my books so we could be in for some slop ourselves tomorrow. Going pretty early though so hopefully only on the way out slop wise.

I'll post some pics and info later in a brief TR soon.

would be good to have a real update on this one. I would still expect sledders on the meadows, some will go until the snow is nearly gone.
Last time we went, they went up 200m stretches of bare gravel road, just trying to reach the snowpack
