Stargazers will be treated to a rare glimpse of a “Supermoon” this weekend when our celestial neighbor strays closest to Earth. During the annual display, the moon appears to swell larger in size and wax in brightness. Scientists say that the moon will look 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than all the other full moons of 2012 and will be visible at its peak from 03:00 GMT on Sunday for approximately 35 minutes.

A Supermoon happens when the moon’s elliptical orbit swings it closest to the Earth.

Just giving you photographers a "Heads Up!"

I'm going to give it a shot but the skies aren't looking entirely favourable.

This is a great tool for planning any night shots.

I was in the city and caught a brief glimpse. I can barely tell the moon apart from the lights in this concrete jungle. Still pretty cool..

Caught it over Goose Spit.

Wished I'd had an SLR and tripod handy.

Mark your calendars, the next supermoon isn't too far away — June 4, 2012. I'll try not to leave my camera behind as I did this past weekend.

Thanks for your heads up... hope the weather co-operates. Missed this last one.
