Hello,

We're spending the weekend in Osoyoos in a week's time. I want to do a hike in the Mount Kruger area. That's one day sorted, but are there any other good hikes in the area suitable for this time of year?

I'm looking for a good-length day hike, say 6 hours or so, ideally below the snow line (at least for most of its length), and especially if it ends up on the top of something. I was wondering about Anarchist Mountain to the east of Osoyoos, or Mount Richter to the West (although this one looks like it might take longer than 6 hours). Other suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks everybody.

Richard.

Either Anarchist or Richter are great... I was on both last weekend...

There are lots of trails on both, but not a lot of "formal hikes"...

Some are here: http://www.rdos.bc.ca/index.php?id=123

Lots of wildlife (bears, cougars, coyotes, rattlesnakes and ATV'ers) up there too...

Take a GPS with you, and you'll never get lost !!!

Some of my pics are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chillijack/sets/72157604714196415/

Have fun...

Rick, great photos. Where would you recommend starting Anarchist and Richter from? With a starting point and an iMap, I reckon I can figure the rest out.

The Keremeos Columns were in the back of my mind, and I'd like to go and see them at some point. But now I have twice as many things to do as I have days!

Hey Richard...

Hope some of this helps:

I haven’t been up Richter, but there is a 5km trail on top of Kobau, and you can drive to the top of that !!!

For Kruger, start either at the newly named “Turtle Lake” (I named it ‘cos it’s full of Turtles !!!)...

Or park at the North end of Blue Lake...

...

From there, you can head down to Kilpoola or stay on the gravel road and head South towards the US border... There are a million game trails up there, and you shouldn’t get lost... There a cool cliff on the West side of Blue Lake that I’ll be heading up pretty soon...

For the East side of the Valley, you can start at the end of Long Joe Road...

...

A dirt trail heads up from the end of the Road and park at the cattle grid... Last Fall a large tree blocked driving access, but you can only go a couple hundred meters to the top of the bluff anyways...

About half a km in, there’s a dirt road to the left that follows a contour line and into the Anarchist Protected Area... There are Moose trails in the area, with a small lake where they are...

If you keep going West, the trail turns North with spectacular view over the Valley... I’ve seen a ton of Mountain Sheep along the ridge too...

Or just stay on the road and head to the top, where there is a burned out Forest Ranger hut... This was the worst hit area in the huge 2003 fire, and you can still see the burned out hydro wires !!!

For the Anarchist Mountain area, start from 2 points... Either off Bull Moose Road or Raven Hill:

...

Take Bull Moose and then Lamont (which is a dirt road off the asphalt one)... Keep going North on Lamont (either walk or drive) till you get to the tree line (the dark area in the shot above), over a cattle grid and through the forest to an old log cabin... There are a million trails heading up the mountain to the North...

For Raven Hill, park at the end of the road, and go around the gate by heading left or right a 100m (this is private land, but if you wave at the nice owners, they wont shoot you !!! If you’re lucky, the gate will be open, ‘cos the original Regal Ridge developer recently went tits up !!!)...

The old logging road (you’re now on Crown Land) heads North on the top of a ridge again to the tree line, where there is another old ranch... I like to get down into the Nine Mile Creek Valley, and head North along it... Then you can loop back along the top for some variety... Lots of Deer and Bear in here...

Remember, this is Deer Tick season in the South Okanagan, so wear long pants and keep vigilant for the tiny little rat-bastards !!!

Have fun... I’ll be doing these trails again on the May long weekend...

Cheers...

Rick...

We go up to Osoyoos every year- and one of our favourite activities is to do what we call the "Osoyoos Grind"- hiking up Anarchist Mountain from the Inkaneep Indian Reserve on the shores of Osoyoos Lake.

Unfortunately, a new condo and golf course development on the reserve has made it more difficult to start from the campground there- so we usually now start at the top of the first big switchback on the highway up Anarchist Mountain.

At the top, there are a couple of old logging roads that go north across the hillside from subdivision roads that can be used to finish the hike and get back to civilization.

Excellent. Thank you all very much for the input, especially to Rick. I feel a little more prepared now. I'll let you know what we decided when we've done it.

I don't think we'll be venturing as far as Hedley mines this time, but I wasn't aware that it was there until you mentioned it, Pmicheals. Maybe I'll include this in a future trip.
