| Amazing device. Always carry one on family trips. But, it needs time to work, clearing an area. The holster is for fly fishing. |

| Not a bad option for hiking/backpacking. I've thought about taking mine as it really doesn't weigh much. As johngenx said, takes a bit of time to work, affects really only about a 10' sq area or so but does do ok in keeping mozies away. Not sure about black flies... |

Due Diligence:
"The repellent is allethrin, a copy of a repellent that naturally occurs in chrysanthemum flowers. It repels up to 98 percent of mosquitoes, black flies, and no-see-ums, and will not harm humans or pets."
http://www.thermacell.com/mosquito-repellent/why-thermacell/how-it-works
"allethrins are a pair of related synthetic compounds used in insecticides."
"The compounds have low toxicity for humans and birds, and are used in many household insecticides such as RAID as well as mosquito coils. They are however highly toxic to fish and bees. Insects subject to its exposure become paralyzed (nervous system effect) before dying."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allethrins
It seems that the Thermacell emits a cloud of insecticide similar to RAID, which while claimed to have low human toxicity, is highly toxic to fish and bees. Allethrins are chemically defined as an insecticide, while Thermacell advertises it as a repellent.
From Thermacell's Poison, toxicity, and materials hazards cautions in the instruction manual: "PRECAUTIONS: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND PETS. Harmful if inhaled. Avoid breathing vapours. ... Avoid contact with skin and clothing. Wash hands with soap and water after use. Cover exposed food. ... This pesticide is highly toxic to fish. Do not apply directly to water. Drift from treated areas may be hazardous to organisms in adjacent aquatic sites. ... Unused or partially used products should be disposed at provincially designated hazardous waste disposal sites.
[Use is subject] to the Pest Control Products Act."
http://www.thermacell.com/sites/default/files/canada-appliance-insert.pdf
In short, this product contains and emits poisonous substances and can contaminate foodstuffs, fruit, and vegetables, may be hazardous to human health, toxic to fish and bees, and harmful to the environment.
Use at yours, and at the risk to the natural environment.
