Parks Canada hit by latest federal job cuts http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2012/04/30/pol-federal-job-cuts-parks-canada-hit.html?cmp=rss
Another 3,872 public servants were told Monday they may lose their jobs as the government released the latest round of notices to 10 departments and agencies.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada says Parks Canada is the hardest hit, with 1,689 affected notices going to the agency that runs national historic sites and national parks, including Jasper and Banff.
That could mean shorter seasons and fewer jobs in small communities, union spokespeople said.
Not all those who get affected notices will lose their jobs — the notices mean they are part of a unit that will see cuts, and are at risk of being laid off. In Parks Canada, for example, 638 jobs have been declared surplus. But it could be months before staff find out whose jobs are safe.
NATUREMap: Canada's 42 national parks The affected workers include people at national historic sites and national parks, the union said in a press release. Parks Canada's website shows 42 national parks, 167 department-administered national historic sites and four national marine conservation areas in the country.
Staff across the country are getting affected notices.
British Columbia: 106 staff. Prairies: 299 staff. The North: 65 staff. Ontario: 396 staff. National Capital Region (Ottawa and Gatineau, Que.): 115 staff. Quebec: 300 staff. The Atlantic: 408 staff. A spokesman for Parks Canada's staff union said there will be 13 jobs cut in Banff and 21 staff will work a shortened season, going from full-time to part-time. In Jasper, 30 workers will have shorter seasonal terms and 16 will be eliminated entirely. |

Sad news. Though I hear they're hiring for pipeline and oil sands projects. |

| These civil servants are not paid extravagant salaries. They are entrusted with looking after our national treasures - some are world heritage sites. Is visitation really that far down that we have surplus Parks Canada employees? |

13 full time jobs and 30 reduced contracts in Jasper. Similar numbers for Banff. There are no trail crews in Jasper this year. They are hiring one worker and one working supervisor for trails, that's it. Sucks |

1. Cut funding.
2. Service starts to suck
3. People complain
4. Use the situation to babble about "the failures of socialism" and champion the cause of privatization.
End result: Booster Juice outlets at the Ramparts. |

| Typical short-sighted Neo-con thinking. I'm surprised it took Harper this long to start swinging his ridiculous axe. |

The Conservatives must just HATE the National Parks - they can't strip mine them or clearcut them. Yet.
AND they're full of environmental terrorists! |

Think of the restraint it took to implement such changes so gradually... |

| With all the Federal environmental changes that have been bundled with this budget bill, I really think the current crop of Conservatives including our dear Prime Minister don't give a rat's ass about the environment for the present and future generations. |

| I wish Mr. Harper would do a full audit of indian affairs( lots of non indians profiting ) and do some major downsizing of other ministries as well. I would like to have responsible government in office but lets get real, not one of our elected governments really can be trusted once they are elected in. As to parks ,well I guess the priorities of maintaining tourism is pretty far down the list. |

It depends on whose list. Parks aren't very far down my list. But someone from Surrey or Alberta might have a different list. |

I think it is unfortunate since parks are near and dear to the site users, but hard choices have to be made. There are no easy times for the politicians these days since we can all see (with Greece) what continued overspending and deficits lead to. So what gets cut instead? Should old age, unemployment insurance, child benefits, provincial transfers (health care and education), aboriginal affairs, health, human resources etc be cut instead? I would put those higher on my list, and those account for 2/3 of the federal government expenses. I guess the near unanimous response on this site would be to save the parks and further reduce the defense budget... |

| The most significant Parks Canada cuts already happened years ago, when they reduced the number of actual wardens per district. The parks backcountry has been all but abandoned by officials, well except for biologist who snowmobile in to count caribou then recommend killing wolves! LOL, with that logic perhaps we should all be hunting trains as well... |

| The government has more than enough money for the service we want, including health, education, and protecting the environment. We don't need to cut defense spending, we just don't need to spend an extra bunch of money on planes that experts aren't sure we even really need. |

It is a question of priorities. I am sure the Greek government chants the same slogans about parks as Mr Harper. But Greece managed to find €7 billion in 2010 alone (3.4% of their entire economy) for military toys. If they get their bailout this year, they plan to buy:
- 60 fighter aircraft €3.9 billion
- French frigates for over €4 billion
- patrol boats for €400 million
- german subs for €2 billion
Sound familiar?

Why doesn't the government HAVE more money? A dramatic shift in the tax structure. Corporations said they needed taxes reduced in order to create jobs and provide prosperity. So, the tax burden was shifted to individuals. Now, we have had massive increases in GDP, but unemployment has stayed quite high (expect in some regions) and corporate treasuries are filled with cash. Cash that does nothing.
We were promised super low unemployment and good wage growth if only we'd cut corporate taxes. So we did. And we got back pretty much nothing. |

Neo-conservatives and economists (possibly I am being redundant) believe that lower taxes are "good for the economy". This is despite any supporting evidence and numerous contradictory cases. For example,
- Ireland almost eliminated corporate and export taxes in 1981. Their economy briefly ballooned, then tanked.
- One of the wealthiest decades in Canada's history was 1950 - 1960. The top marginal tax rate was 91%.
- When Finance Minister Jim Flaherty was asked by CBC "How many jobs will be created by his tax cut?" He replied (words to the effect) "it was impossible to say... too many other factors"
