I like to hike Shannon Falls area in spring. Having been up Chief so many times as well as Slhaney this March (no TR, but here is nice pano )
I thought I'd try something else this time.

Petgill trailhead is at east side of Hwy99, some 150-200 m north from Murrin Park/Browning Lake parking area (which is about 2 km from Britannia Beach). I left directions at home & actually started walking in opposite direction (south), but quickly realized my mistake and turned around. There is small sign indicating start of trail -- as well as warning to "hike on your own risk"

Initial part is steep and a bit scrambly, but quickly reverts to 'normal' coast forest trail. Some 30-40 minutes in there is good view of Squamish and Howe Sound; it's a shame it was cloudy because on bluebird day this must quite a Kodak moment:

Worst part of the day comes soon after this. Trail intersects old logging road and follows it for quite some time. Somewhat similar to lower part on Brunswick, quite ugly and boring. Higher up there is some nice old growth and good view of Goat Ridge from Rocky bluff -- some 30 mins before the lake. Snow started just before the lake which is still almost frozen. There was fair amount of it further which made walking quite unpleasant

Big cloud was hanging halfway up Goat Ridge. I know this traverse is high on the list of more adventurous folks; it would be quite an undertaking in these conditions with all snow moats etc.

I gave up on circuit around the lake, but went to check advertised Viewpoint. It took some effort to get there with all the snow; at the end I was disappointed. I've seen some online panos from this point done on bluebird days and they sure were pretty -- not the case today. So I turned back and scampered away, just in time to beat the rain.

At the end I must say I can not recommend this hike. It is spent in forest almost in its entirety. Lake is unremarkable, and trudge up old FSR kills you. I'd say do it in low season when there is nothing else available.

Finally some stats: about 5 hr return (including generous breaks), about 10km and GPS clicked at 850m cumulative elevation gain

sorry you feel that way zeljkok I found it to be a decent hike. Possibly I just have been on worse hikes and it has skewed my opinion.

Nice shots, good one of the panno.

Really interesting how your picture shows the layered effect in the snow chunks.

You did a great job in the photos. I really like the pano. looked at it three times.
Pretty place. What is that rocky place, the Chief? Saw in our local news some dude flying off of it in a squirrel suit? He made natl news.

Thank you. Yes, that is Stawamus Chief. You can also see Squaw (Slhaney) peeking behind.

Thanks Karvitk. I was actually considering coming on your hike; but bailed out because of weather. I want to hike more in your neck of the woods this season; I've been only on Elk/Thurston, Flora and McDonald so far so pls keep me posted if you need company

I've been on worse hikes as well Cam. But my perception is forever skewed from years of hiking in Kananaskis -- personal best place in the world (no offense). Maybe I was unfair about Petgill, although I suspect you really need to go higher to get real feel for the area. I see NSH has trip going up Goat Ridge in July. If weather is clear I plan to come for good shot of Sky Pilot.

Just a slight condition update, the lake is 100% defrosted. Snow is almost totally gone.

Did this hike before with my brother. Yes i agree theres not too many amazing views(ive only done it in feb) but its a great, easy and accessible hike, close to vancouver. I have to say my favorite part is just the short scramble over the highway. I love pointing out to ppl as we drive by the trail head, oh ya, theres a great hike! Then they look at me like ive got lobsters coming out of my ears (Christmas story refference) hehehe
