Or are they called 'Pizzlies'?

Hmmm...
Take a grizzly, upsize it by a few hundred kilos and bleach it white, and get it to think of humans as a food source.
Okay. NOW I'm nervous. |

The convention forms a portmanteau name by putting the species of the father first. So a Grolar bear has a griz for a father and a polar for the mother, while a Pizzly is the opposite. |

So a male mule would be a horsekey and a female would be a donkhorse? And since jack pine and lodgepole pine interbreed, there would be jackpoles and lodgepines?
(Just yanking your chain. In this case we have no way of knowing the parentage of the bear.)
Actually 'pizzlies' sounds so foolish that I can see why OnEarth magazine would avoid using that name. |

That being when they are new and conceptual and haven't been given their own official species name. Actually, a mule is specifically a male donkey with a female horse. The opposite is not commonly produced. I believe that many crosses do come out notably different when the parentage is swapped. The Liger, for example, is specifically a male lion and a female tiger. I agree that Grolar sounds a lot more plausible than 'Pizzly'. But I kind of like the 'horsekey'. Interesting ring to it... |

I didn't remember at the time what the opposite was called, but yup. Looks like that one's rare enough to still mostly use the easy format. |
