The full name of this book is Trees, Shrubs, and Flowers to Know in British Columbia and Washington. This book was produced by C.P.Lyons and Bill Merrilees and published by Lone Pine. ISBN 1-55105-044-7.
This is a very usefull plant identification book and can be used on its own or as I prefer, to supplement the Plants of Coastal B.C. book mentioned earlier. Colour photographs, arranged by colour sections for quick reference, of most species are included. It's the detailed diagrams of the plants and sometimes roots that set this book apart from others. Often when trying to identify plants, we can't always do it during bloom times so form and structure recognition becomes important. I've used this book when the pictures or descriptions in Plants of Coastal B.C. were not clear. Species included are not just limited to coastal areas either as the interior and Rocky Mountains are covered too.
Also included in the appendices is a section on ferns, a list of edible plants, and a flowering and fruiting calendar for many species.
This book can be found at both the U.B.C. and B.C.I.T. bookstores in the Renewable Resource section. I've also seen them at Costco on occasion for around $15. |

Sounds like something I've been lurking for, leatherman. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for that one as I think I could put a few km on this book. Rawk n' Role!

| Hi leatherman. I have the older edition with the hand-drawn pictures by the author. For some plants, he drew a guy in a suit and hat standing there for scale. Maybe I'll look around for the newer one. Thanks |

The version I have was published in 1995.
It says it was originally published 1952/54 and then revised in 1965,74, and 82.
I don't think the older ones have the colour pics. The pics are handy when you want to quickly id because they are organized by colour groups.
One downside to this book is that it does not organize according to plant family like the Coastal Plants books does, nor does it have dichotomous keys. But for the beginner who doesn't want to get hung up on complicated nomenclature, this is a good book. |

| If you really want a good plant book for southern BC get "Plants of Southern Interior British Columbia". |

Is that the one authored by Robert Parish and Ray Coupe? (ISBN 1551050579)
If so then it was probably published by Lone Pine and its an awesome book too. Most of the authors of these books worked for the Forest Service and produced these books with FRDA money. It's a usefull series because you can get a book that specializes for your area no matter if it's coastal, interior or northern(ISBN 1-55105-015-3).
The Trees, Flowers, and Shrubs to Know in British Columbia and Washington is a good supplement to all these books, and definately not a replacement.
