I spent the weekend in the Waterton area and had a mix of weather. Sunday the 8th was beautiful though, so we did a nice loop around Lakeview Ridge. The wardons had advised us to stay out of the backcountry due to high avalanche risk and a whole lot of snow.

-- the Ranger cabin near Akamina Pass on April 7 was almost fully buried. We considered going up Forum Ridge, but with no views to be had (flurries), we didn't bother.

One can access the Lakeview Ridge area, on the north-eastern edge of the park, by taking either the Horseshoe Basin Trail, or the Park Boundary Trail. Both are obvious and an easy grade.

-- Lakeview Ridge in foreground
-- Elk heard with Lakeview Pk at right

Park at the end of the Bison Paddock road (follow signs off Hgwy 5), follow the fence east for a bit until you see a sign that is a junction for the two above stated trails. We followed the Horseshoe Trail, as it meanders higher into a lovely basin.

-- Galway at left

Instead of following the trail all the way to a col, we gained the ridge earlier. There are lots of places to do this, on easy terrain. Choose a line and head on up. Once on the ridge the views opened up.

-- lots of looks at the north side of Bellevue Hill, Galway, Dungarvan and Dungarvan SE2, and prairie too.

-- the view northish toward Pincher Creek.
-- our next destination along the ridge, from what google calls Lakeview Pk- highpoint about 6415ft.

We finished the day by traversing the rest of the ridge, with some up and down, than dropping off the east side of the east part of the ridge to meet up with the Park Boundary Trail, which took us back to our car. Some bushwacking required....

-- at the parking area.

Approx stats: 9hrs with breaks
17km
3200ft cum el.

This route does not take you up any huge peaks or through technical terrain, but the views are nice, and it's a good early season hike in that area. IMO.

Nice trip report. Looks like a traverse from Lakeview Peak to Dungarvan SE2 would be pretty straight forward.

Cool! I've been wanting to get down to Waterton all winter - stuff keeps getting in the way! Did you jump from that roof?

^^ Ya we discussed giving DungarvanSE2 a go. Looks like there are some scrambly parts up top, but the connecting ridge looked easy. I read of a traverse from Galway, SE2, to Dungarven.

^ Naa we never jumped from the roof...

Did Andrew do a traverse? I recall looking at the climb down from Galwey's summit block and it looked pretty exposed. Though There might be a way around the summit block. It'd be interesting to read that trip report.

Those are great pictures and some sweet terrain! The contrast between the peaks and flat lands is fantastic.
