Haven't seen any prints out, but media article saying the bears are out in the North Shore:

Fear factor alert. Bears are out and rather peckish.

Another reminder to carry your bear spray, and sharpen your BFK's for protection purposes.

Saw a black bear foraging on Eagle Bluffs two Saturday's ago. A black bear was seen foraging outside the Crystal Hut on Blackcomb this week at 1900m.

Some bears are definitely out and about.

Subject: [MCR] Grizzly encounter on Guiness Gully
Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2012 19:06:24 -0600

Just had a phone call from a good friend who topped out on P2 of Guiness Gully
face to face w a grumpy grizzly. They promptly descended while hearing the
grizzly endeavoring to track them down. With the spring temps seems
hibernation is coming to an end. Time to dust off the bear spray.

I usually come ot of "Guiness Gully" with what tastes like a sock (with a bit of miles on it) in my mouth.

Saw another black bear foraging just above Hwy 99N just north of interpretive kiosk at big turn above Horseshoe Bay last night. Rolling rocks on the reseeded area above the cliff on the east side of the Hwy. Looked big and healthy...

Ministry of Environment & radio interviews are saying this could be a year of unusual bear-intrusions into suburban neighborhoods. The cause will likely be the deeper snowpacks lasting longer that deter normal denning habits and erasing normal feeding patterns.
The past 5-years have seen 600 bears per year legally-killed by these 'conflicts' and only about 93 per year relocated.
At least 10 were killed in the area near where I live in 2011.
This year may be worse according to the experts.

Apparently "they" are pumping an additional $225,000 into the Bear Aware program... sad that it is still needed but glad it's value is being recognized.

The low sleepers along the north Thompson are out.The five I have seen all looked very healthy nice and rotund with long shiny coats. Skunk cabbage is popping like crazy, still they will be valley dwellers for a least a while. Hopefully bearanoia will not lead to unnecessary slaughter.

Wow, we missed those when we hiked this trail on Sunday; however, there was a big pile of scat near the start of the trail where it follows Norrish Creek for a bit. Do you suppose the bears want to take in the view before they bed down for a nap?

yes Greyowl, the first looks right down on the 3rd bluff from behind. the bear will be able to pick the lunch it wants to eat from Goldilocks. the other is near the top bluff at the end of the logging road. I was following a deer trail down a ridge off a side bluff and walked right into it. both have killer views.

Speaking of bears being out - caught this guy as I was driving along the Squamish Valley Rd this afternoon - he basically stayed put as I get closer and closer - had the camera with a telephoto lens handy so took a few pics of him from inside my truck.

Cheers
