Had our first paddle of the year yesterday on Francois Lk. A 20-30km section of the East end of the lake never froze this year. The weather was finally warm enough so we went for a sunny paddle. We enjoyed a lunch on the beach and practiced making fires with a Light My Fire firesteel.

Annamarie's been cooped for a long winter.

Headed out today for my second pole of the year. My brother Dave joined me for a trip on the Stellako river. It flows from Francois Lk. to Fraser Lk. We made it up about 3kms. I'm learning and liking it more each trip. It's definitely a neat way to enjoy a canoe.
A few pics...

Nice one, good to see you getting out canoeing already. What are the bones from, any idea? |

I'm gonna guess the pelvic bone of a deer.

| Looks like a fun area for paddling! All you need is a steep snowy bank near the water so you can ride the canoe down and into the water. Just like tobogganing onto a frozen lake; except the lake isn't frozen and the toboggan floats! |

I'm intrigued by this poling technique. I might have to give that a shot this year.

I've seen once the scapula [front shoulder bone] of a moose converted into a rough canoe paddle. |

Hey Steventy, give it a shot. You'll like it. Here's a link to a inexpensive pole to make.

Cambium, now I think this was a moose because there was a large paddle shaped bone there. We commented on how it could easily be fashioned into a paddle. It was perfectly shaped.
