This bump next to the Norquay Ski Hill is known as Stoney Squaw Mountain. Wikipedia indicates this is because Cascade Mountain was once known as Stoney Chief Mountain. I did not know that.
According to Andrew Nugara's new snowshoeing book, this is a very popular trail. Today we had it all to ourselves. It was a pleasant snowshoe trip, especially with all the new snow on the trees. With the sunny and warm day, the snow was melting fast and sticking to our snowshoes.
The trail we were on seemed to meander and at some point I decided to follow a more direct route to the summit. Floatation was really good off the packed trail. We connected with another trail near the top. Views are limited, but do provide some different angles to the recognizable surrounding peaks.
The whole time I was thinking two things. This would be a good trip for kids, because it's short and with lots of snow it's fun. Also this is the type of trip that would be quite popular with the Calgary Outdoor Club, as it's low hazard and outside of the club's frequented Kananaskis Country boundary. I'll have to suggest it to some of the coordinators.

| Nice photos Marko! I did this one last December, combined with Sulphur Mountain to make a day. The view is even more limited than from the nearby Tunnel Mtn. The thing that impressed me on this bump is the snow covered trees, just like your 2nd and 7th photo shows. |

It's a decent little jaunt... in the sumemr you can find fossils on some of the rock outcrops along the trail. Always good for the little ones.

Steven, thanks! I see you removed your fotki link. It looks like we took similar photos, minus the zoom on the corresponding peaks. I guess there aren't really too many unique angle/view options. :)
Wietse, I wouldn't recommend it for skiing. This is just a short trip, roughly a 1.5 - 2 hour loop snowshoeing. This winter has been one of my laziest. I've had a heck of a time with motivation and energy. My ankles are still quite weak from the injuries last year and I'm still wearing braces. That's one of the reasons I chose this short trip. I figured it was better than staying home and it didn't require too much planning, thought or fitness. :)
Karl, thanks! With the zoom lens I was able to make it seem like we had some nice openings, but they were few. The trail was mostly in the trees. |
